Mates car failed test and had to be retested, only failed on track rod ends so replaced them and sent for retest, that morning before test EML came on! Of all the days the morning of a test!!!!

Anyhow I had diagnostic tool to scan and O2 sensor p0141 came up, erased it and it stayed off while car was warm but when started from cold would come on, so mission was for me to sit in car with it idling away so it wouldnt cool down while he was in queuing to pay, the car was tested and passed anyway and the EML never came on but I was just wondering IF the EML had of came on in the retest would that of failed it on the spot or would it of been ignored due to not being listed as a fail item the first time around?

My understanding is that it would not have failed as the retest was for the track rods, unless it was deemed a dangerous defect.

AFAIK EML is not a fail because it doesn't affect the 'road worthiness' of the car.

Correct, the only dash lights that fail in the NCT manual are
Malfunction Indicators for Airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS/Electronic Braking System (EBS) and Parking Brake.
but the EML might have indicated a problem with emissions which probably would have failed if it had been lit on the original test.

Did stheno not put up some quote from nct where the eml is a fail for diesel and not petrol?

P0141 is the heating element of the lambda sensor, so the fault will only be triggered when the engine/exhaust are cold. Once up to full temperature the lambda will read and function correctly so won't effect emissions.

Having said all that, if you bring it back for the retest within the 28 days then they will only be testing what failed in the first test.

Nah, it stuck in my mind as I was surprised at it.

Is there a fix for the fault Doc or is he looking at a new sensor altogether?

Would something like a vacuum leak somewhere are anything like that effect the sensor this way?

    Cheers
