    Hi Folks,

I was hoping to get some advice from you regarding OBD-II and EOBD Code Scanners.

I have recently been made redundant from a garage I have worked in for the last 14 years.

My plan is to open my own garage but I will need an OBD-II and EOBD Code Scanner.

Can you recommend decent ones which will help with fault finding and knocking out both the engine light and airbag light.

    Thanks,

    k_p_b

If you intend working on vag cars, vcds is a no brainer. Once off purchase and updates are free. Also obd built in, You will need a laptop to run it.
A good starting starting point but you will soon find there is no one tool to do all.

If my opinion you need a product with a wide range of car brands supported to start with, so you can cover as much as possible.
Then when you move on and start making money, go with the more expensive tools or more specific ones, they will give you more advanced features, such as car coding and programing.

Check products such as the MaxiDAS, Autoboss etc

Just another question, is it possible to buy a software package for my laptop and use it for diagnostics/clearing codes etc.....? I can buy all of the cables then online.

dieselbug I think you referred to this in an earlier post. Where can I get the software you referred to?

    Regards,

    k_p_b.

"dieselbug I think you referred to this in an earlier post. Where can I get the software you referred to?"

The one I referred to was, VCDS. An excellent tool, dedicated to VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda giving almost complete coverage on these makes, but these makes only. Have a look on the Ross-Tech site for details and info. It does also have eobd software, but this only covers engines on other makes that are eobd compliment. No airbags, abs etc. Only emissions related software for engine.
This is a link to the official Irish distributor for vcds, talk to Peter.

This is a link to Ross-Tech, loads of info and support on this site.

A decent all makes scanner like this one

    http://autocom.se/en/products/cars

will probably set you back in the region of 2 to 2.5k plus about e500 per year for software updates.

Keep an eye on the link below for some good used equipment that may fit your budget, do your research and ask opinion on here if you find something of interest.
Beware of rubbish copys and fake clones and dont fall for salesman talk of how their tool does everything, it doesent.
