Erasmus in Spain

Within the coming months I have to decide which university in Spain to apply to for next year,as it is a compulsory part of my degree.

At the moment I really don't have a clue where I'd like to go, but I've pretty much narrowed it down to either Salamanca, Granada, Barcelona and Oviedo.

Can anyone here offer any advice or experiences of studying anywhere in Spain?

I'm on Erasmus in Granada. It's certainly an experience. To be honest, I've found the college here very difficult to deal with. It's almost like they take on more international students than they're capable of dealing with and I haven't found the staff particularly helpful. At times it does feel very like being thrown in the deep end and just being expected to swim. An awful lot of paperwork to fill out - they seem to be about a generation behind when it comes to technology.

It's a nice city, very laid back atmosphere and plenty of bars and clubs about the place. Lots of parties and trips aimed at Erasmus students where you can meet a lot of new people. Finding a place takes a few days, but rent is a pretty reasonable. Be aware though, that rent usually doesn't include bills, you pay extra for that.

I went to ULL in Tenerife. It was the best experience ever. It's up the north so you're away from the tacky tourist areas. The erasmus group is large but a tight bunch somehow, mostly consisting of crazy Italians- be warned you may come back with Spanish with a tinge of an Italian accent. The people on the island are so fun and friendly and it's super cheap. The universities admin is a mess though so go straight to the English dept unlike I did if you're struggling.

If this doesn't appeal to you, Salamanca is a beautiful university and the city is a notorious student party place and also boasts great past students. Barcelona is fab, but maybe more for a weekend, I'd worry there'd be too many English speakers to hang around with and you'd miss the chance to improve your Spanish unless completely self-deisciplined. I'm afraid I can't comment on the other two :)

    Best of luck.
