I think this thread will be okay in here since its film related, since HMV is now closed is there anywhere left that actually stocks a good selection of Blu Rays? Or is it going to be a case of having to buy online from here on out?

Ive been to Tower Records yesterday there stock of Blu Rays is beyond abysmal, I've rang pretty much all the Golden Discs that were within driving distance of me and only one has Lawless on Blu Ray and there not even stocking Dredd on DVD never mind Blu Ray.

Xtra-vision and Tesco, though they might only stock popular and recent titles. Online is probably the way to go from now on.

Yeh xtra vision isn't really the best most of what they sell is ex rental copies and you have to wait a while before there willing to sell them, Tesco's are meant to sell blu rays alright but none the ones I've been to stock them. Probably is online play.com till it shuts I suppose. Just figured I'd ask was there anywhere left stocking a decent blu ray selection.

As said, they're shutting down, as the UK gobberment eventually got rid of the loophole that allowed them to sell cheap stuff tax free...

Will that effect Amazon? Don't they sell out of the island of Jersey or something to avoid paying tax?

Not exactly, from what I understand it will still be a "marketplace" seller ie If you want Prometheus on blu ray it will be shipped from a third party seller not from their warehouses as it used to be (relevant bit highlighted).

"On 9 January 2013, it was announced that Play.com would be closing its direct retail business in March 2013 to focus on its marketplace due to changes in the rules of Low Value Consignment Relief, which previously exempted its sales from certain taxes.[9]

Xtravison for me, they usually have some decent 3 for 2 deals on ex-rentals and since blu-rays don't scratch I'm a happy bunny :)

Blu-Rays do scratch and when it comes to smudges and scratches they are far more likely to not work as a result. Small damage to a Blu is more damaging that it would be to a DVD.

I use amazon although it's a bit of a hassle having to pay 25 pounds to get the free shipping as it wouldn't be worth it otherwise but their postage is very good and quick :) I've bought some stuff from wowhd before , you can find some good deals but most are way over priced. Gamestop also do some pre owned blu rays (selection would depend on which gamestop you go to) and they always have a buy one get one free or a 3 for 2 on all blu rays and dvds, cheapest price they'd have is 8 euro , so if there's a buy one get one free it's a really good deal.

Yes my copy of The Prestige had the smallest scratch and it wouldn't even get to the menu :( took me ages to find another copy and then I bought two for €10 so it would never happen again :P

They do scratch and now i have a rule that all discs have to put back in cases :D

Gamestop's second hand Blus are generally way over priced and
even the buy 1 get 1 free doesn't make them any better value. Case in point Kill Bill, they have parts 1 and 2 in my local atm for 7.99 a piece. May seem like great value when you think you can get bothfor 7.99 but considering the boxset was 9.99 in HMV its suddenly s lot less of a deal. I stopped buying any Blu-Ray in Gamestop awhile back as I had a very poor experience when I bought Red and brought it back a few days later as it kept skipping. Was asked "what to you expect from second hand stuff" by the manager who refused to refund me my money

my local one does have a pretty good selection and i think the prices are fairly good as i always do a price match online after. I have had one problem where they put the wrong discs in,but I went back in and they switched it no problem. Buying the movies separately is always going to be pricey than getting the box set.

I wasn't trying to imply they are forged in the fires of Mt. Doom but they are far tougher than DVD's, the 30 or so near perfect ex-rental/pre-owned Blu-rays I have are testament to that.

Blurays have significantly better scratch protection from day to day handling, the coating material is much harder.

If you do scratch them, it seens more likely to render the disc unwatchable. Compared to DVD where a scratched-looking disc might just skip a little bit and then continue fine.

You can usually tell whether an ex-rental disc will work just by looking at it. Axial scratches are much worse for both formats and anything deep looking on a Bluray is a bad sign (the data layer is much closer to the surface).
