    Hello,
Just wondering if someone could explain some details for me:

Condition: Married - if a person is 95 at death, does this confirm that spouse is still alive?

Sign, etc of Informant: Inmate Occupier, Deceased - Is this an institution? Informant had same surname as deceased. What does the "Deceased" mean?

I have other certs which state the informant was "occupier" - does this mean that the informants were living in the home with the deceased?

    tks

I would read married as the spouse still alive.

Occupier often refers to someone in administration in an institution - e.g. hospital, workhouse, asylum etc

What the place of death on the cert ?

Thanks, the death took place in 1869 so there might have been a workhouse there.
    District: Ballyduff
    Union: Lismore

    Place of death: Tallowbridge

    Residence of informant: Tallowbridge

Tallowbridge seems to be a town just north of the town of Tallow - probably part of the suburbs now. Tallowbridge town is located in the townland named 'Tallowbridge lands' - I dont see any Hospital or similar in the townland on the 1830s or c1900s OSI map - see :

    Tallowbridge

The nearest Workhouse would have been in Lismore town

What's the name of the informant ?

this wording is a bit strange .. inmate is the term usually used for people in workhouses, asylums etc. From what I've seen Occupier usually crops up for similar list of institutions, but suppose it could sometimes refer to the main occupant of a private property also.

Is the last part of this phrase, i.e. 'deceased', clear, could that be be an unclear something else ?

    Hi Shane,

    Full details under informant were:
Patk. Blackburn, Inmate Occupier, Deceased, Tallowbridge

Maybe the word deceased was transcribed in error at some stage.

I have done research on the family from the Tithe Records, through to Griffiths and the Valuation Books. The deceased had been in arrears with his rent but the debt was paid off when his son in law took over - so unlikely to be in a workhouse in any case.

sometimes people ended up in workhouses or Asylums for medical reasons - e.g. after a stroke or other illness, as it was often the only place they could be looked after.

The location is a little strange in this case - maybe there's a hospital, infirmary of some sort nearb that I didn't see on the map ?

At least Blackburn is a relatively unusual surname, so not to bad for searches... I'll check to see if there are any in directories. These often list people like Poor Law Guardians etc, so if Patk. was connected with a workhouse he might be included.

    Sorry, our posts crossed.

It looks like "Deseased" but I will scan it and enlarge to see if it could be anything else but I doubt it.

The family appear on various directories, tanner, weaver, public house. At least I now have son in law's name I will try to locate that family.

    thanks for your help
