PDC Qualifying School 2013

So the Qualifying school starts today in Wigan with a total of 311 players trying to get themselves tour cards. There are plenty of big names in there and plenty of Irish players too. The four BDo semi-finalists have all declined their offer of a PDC Tour card.

There are a few players I would like to see win their tour cards but Chris Mason is one player I would like to see back on the tour.

Full list of entries can be found here:
    http://www.pdpa.co.uk/2013/01/13/championship-league-darts-information-draws/

    Play starts at 12pm today

Pity Mardle didn't give it a go.

Like to see Gurney get one.

Format is random draw each day amongst the 300 contestants.
Knockout all the way, those that get to the semi-finals each day win a tour card, and don't have to particapate further.

All players are rewarded points for reaching last 8/16/32/64 etc.
The top 9 non-qualifiers (i.e. those who didn't reach a semifinal) under the points system also get a tour card.

Would love to see it, it must be pressurised in a way you just don't get at other events. I'd say you could cut the air.

    Thought he'd be...I dunno...nearer the top table.

I think his weight seems to fluctuate, which can't help his throw.

Twice beyond the group stages in the Grand Slam, once reaching the semis beating Wade with a 105 average along the way...and just couldn't get to the next level as others overtook him.

Nice seeing Ken McNeill through, saw him playing with John Part in the World Cup, seemed a pretty competant player.

Another day, another bout of bloodletting.

Saw the venue on another site, it looks pretty cold and sterile, like an exam hall, heard yesterday that some had to wait up to 5 hours for their games. You'd want to be fairly strong mentally to come through it, but then again I guess that's one of the main requirements for the sport of darts.

I dont think anyone would be waiting 5 hours for a game that doesn't add up.

This was on another forum yesterday, apparently from Steve Maish...

    WHAT A COMPLETE JOKE.

Some guys in the venue for 5 hours AND NOT PLAYED A GAME.

Guys walking around saying even if i win a card today im not paying another £200 to play the tour just here for a jolly up and to see what the pdc set up is like.

Think there might be a few not turning up for the next 3 days lots of unhappy punters

He was less amused when someone enquired was that because he had been beaten!

Theres 18 boards visible in Conors picture (possibly more, but we'll go with 18).
310 entrants so the first round should be 202 byes with the other 108 playing a game reducing to 54 players leading to 54 + 202 = 256 players in round 2.

Thats 3 games per board (54/18) in the first round and 7 games per board (128/18) in the second round so I guess if you got a bye in round one and were drawn as game 7 on a board in round two then you are going to be waiting. If you are unlucky enough to have a few 6-5 games between Priestly/Pipe speedsters ahead of you then its plausible that you could have a 4 hour+ wait. 8 games at 30 minutes a game.

16 boards in use for tournament aj as per kingps first round draw post yesterday

Had forgot about that. So yeah with just 16 boards in play then my maths above make it even more likely to get a 4/5 hour wait.

I'm surprised they have such a rigid 'these 7 matches will be on this board' system as per kingps post. Far better to say 'these 35 matches will be on boards 1-5' and as a board becomes free move the next match onto it. So one slow game has less of a hold-up effect. Bit like multi-queueing theory in supermarkets and banks. [/nerd]

Fair play to him, if he tightens up on his doubles he could make a big impact. I'm glad Haavisto got a card too as he looks like a good player.

Now I'm waiting for Chris Mason to get one!
