Thoughts on 3 potentials...

I've narrowed my search for new wheels to the following and they all can be gotten for roughly the same price - looking for some opinions:

    1. Skoda Superb Elegance (170Bhp) - http://www.carzone.ie/search/Skoda/Superb/ELEGANCE/5713319001085780/advert?channel=CARS
    2. Volvo V70 R Design (134Bhp) - http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volvo/V70/2.0-DIES/31913517794094850/advert?channel=CARS
    3. Brand new Skoda Octavia 1.2TSI Petrol (103Bhp)

    1. Superb - beautiful spec, big and luxurious, performance wise head and shoulders above the others with good economy & medium tax, low mileage but knocking on 3 years old now.

    2. Volvo - a real looker (in the eye of the beholder) gorgeous and comfortable interior, plenty of schpace inside but running costs not great and 570 smackers to tax & 4 years old

    3. Octavia - Brand new (but about to be the 'old model'), 3yrs warranty, good fuel economy, well specced etc. but feels a bit small & isn't a looker like the Volvo.

It's got to be the Superb really doesn't it? 1 & 2 come with 6 months warranty, 3 comes with 3 years obviously as it's brand-new. Drove the Octavia 1.2 TSI and was pleasantly surprised, good fuel economy for a Petrol decent enough go in it. Like the idea of getting a new car with 3yrs warranty but it's a bit bland to be honest.

    What would get your vote?

Which one out of the three potentials? 40 votes

    10 Superb

    09 Volvo V70

    131 Skoda Octavia

    170bhp hands down.

Is it this one http://www.carzone.ie/search/Skoda/Superb/ELEGANCE/5713319001085780/advert?channel=CARS the interior looks nice, I think they look very VW'ish with the cloth interior.

Yeah the very one. Not mad on colour but can get past that...

I think id go with the superb myself, never being a huge fan of the octavia unless its a VRS.
The Volvo car look great in Rdesign spec in fairness. Rare over here though.

Exactly, lovely can in every other way but that colour would take some getting used to. It's probably better to have a look at the car in the flesh to see the colour, sometimes the photos might not show the correct shade. Your problem is if your aprehensive about the colour pre purchase you might have many regrets later should you buy it.

I'd go with the superb. Have you looked at a Mondeo estate although I don't think anything could match the superbs spec.

None in particular. Didn't realise the 1.6tdi Elegance would be similar budget wise.

    Definitely the Superb.

That Volvo is sweet but 22,900 is a dreamer price!!

We paid 21.5k for our brand new last year. They may have gone up slightly but not that much. Ours has sat nav walnut auto wipers trip computer parking sensor all the other toys I would call it bland. Was the 1.2 elegance spec I doubt it the lower specs are alot plainer inside.

It looks more Grey than purple most of the time.

I ordered that car orginially :D. While it's coming up to 3 years old, if it wasn't for the plate on the front, you'd think it was a one year old. Mileage is mainly motorway mileage. The driver lived just North of Drogheda and worked near the aiport - used to pass him fairly frequently on the M1, both in the mornings and the evenings. Came back to us about a year ago and Treacy's bought it from us. Think one of the wives was driving it for a while until they upgraded. It's quite frequently parked at the side of our office when they come to pick up stuff for service.

If you don't need the acres of load area in the Volvo, the Superb does all you need, and has more of the fancy buttons - Nav, Memory electric drivers seat, heated front & rear seats, 30gb hard drive, auto parralel park and xenon lights. It's taken a severe beating from the ugly stick, but is one of the best interiors to be in. Engine in the Superb is much better than the 136ps engine in the Volvo, there is a bit more leg room in the rear of the Superb and the seats in the Superb are even more comfortable than the seats in our V70.

V70 really does look good in R-Design, and will probably lose less money over the coming years than the Skoda.

Don't even bother considering the Octavia - it's totally out of it's league against the other 2 options.

That color actually is very nice in the flesh and really suits the Superb combi.

    Oh
    Go for the superb.

I'd much rather the other two to an Octavia. There's no comparison to be fair.

This one didn't have sat nav but did have all the other bits. Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely motor, hence it makes the final 3 for consideration. It just felt smaller than I expected when I got inside and up close... is it possible for an elegance not to have sat nav I wonder...

Great info, thanks . The Volvo is absolutely stunning, you can't import an R Design for much less than 20k it seems. So the one I'm looking at is the only option. Not sure I'd agree with the other poster who reckons 21/22k is dreamer territory...

Some don't have sat nav I don't think the petrols had sat nav. The other two cars are lovely don't get me wrong the only reason I mentioned it is just incase you thought the diesel was alot more cost wise. Out of the other two I'd go for the suberb it is a lovely car.

Just a pity the Volvo doesn't have more bhp. I love it!

Not gone on the look of the Superb, especially the rear end profile. Got stuck behind a few and it just looked odd.

Are we talking about the new Octavia as the third option?

No, not the new one. I'd be all over that if it was within budget but sadly it ain't. I'm on about the soon to be old model. One of these lads.

If you did all the work yourself, you might get one in under 20k. I'd still be a bit wary of the MPH only speedo too - might cause an issue with regging in Ireland. Volvo's do have the instant speed reading on the on-board computer so it probably gets around it that way, without having to replace the clocks.

That's what I was thinking. The design has hardly changed in a decade, with only few minor face lifts. The new 2013 model will only reinforce its dated design and probably hammer its residuals.

I'd say that Superb was a lovely car to drive.

Pity that Volvo didn't have the 2.4 175bhp engine in it. Same mpg as the 2.0 (47mpg) and tax band is the same.

Go for the superb, I got a 170 dsg elegence combi back in may and have put nearly 50k on it and really can't fault it. Ended up in it from an 140 multitronic a6 combi when the company changed the car policy but delighted with it now, lots of power, smooth delivery and no blank buttons on the dash!
