Finishing Jury Duty

Hi there,

I attended the Criminal Courts of Justice on Parkgate St recently (previously summoned), and i was selected and empaneled on a jury.

Myself and fellow jurors completed our period of service and were thanked by the Judge.

Our jury minder informed us that we will be getting a letter stating the time period that we served (some jurors required this for work).

He told us that due to the fact we have served on a jury, he thinks that we are now exempt from jury service for a period of three years (this is apparently going to be on the letter).

Can anybody clarify if it is three years exemption having previously served on a jury? Is it a different time period? Thanks in advance.

At the end of the Trial, the Judge would have stated the period you are excused for. I think I was excused for ten years the judge excused us for a longer period that normal, he said cause the trial was longer than normal, maybe he did not want us back , never got a letter. But since it was more that ten years ago, a moot point now.

The length of time is at the discretion of the trial judge but is subject to a minimum of 3 years.

On a side note, i have to say i found the whole experience of being on a jury, very interesting. It's quite fascinating to see how the whole system works. I enjoyed it, i thought initially that i wouldn't.

I was a bit worried when i recieved the initial summons, and i found the swearing in etc, incredibly interesting.

Both sides, witnesses etc, the judge. I'd recommend it, if you are called.

Not many of us down this part of the boards qualify for jury duty i'm afraid!

I served on a jury panel in 2010. Just got another Jury Summons last week to show up in February.

Last jury I served on one of the guys was on his 2nd jury panel in 3 years, so it doesn't seem to be unusual.

Unless you want to serve it is a formality to get excused now as you are still in the 3 year period.
