Where is a circuit court case heard?

Can anyone tell me what rules or criteria apply to deciding where a circuit court case is heard. If the defendant is a registered company, are the proceedings lodged in the nearest court to the companys registered address or does the plaintiff decide where they wish to have the case heard?
