KIES - Backup and Restore - AAARGGGGHHHH

So I spent about 3 hours last night trying to use Kies to backup my SGS3 (stock O2 firmware, not rooted), haven't got near factory reset/restoring stage yet. A various combination of errors just frustrated the hell out of me as follows:

    1. Phone wouldn't connect - connecting indicator just kept spinning. Resolved by uninstalling Kies and uninstalling Samsung drivers, reinstalling Kies, restart phone, restart PC, eventually it connected (also tried 'USB debugging mode' in phone, didn't seem to do anything though).

    2. Backup - started fine, then decided not to back up 4 specific categories, such as network & preferences, citing some system memory error.

Tried to back up again, spent about 30 mins 'preparing' then told me to connect the phone. Unplugged and reconnected the phone, please see step 1 above and repeat.

Repeated as above, got to back up stage and on apps it took about 40 mins to get to 3%, then eventually some sort of time out error popped up!

It is useless software, its a good job the phone can be used completely independently of a PC (unlike some others) and drag and drop works (PC/WMP would recognise it instantly in all cases and I could browse away.

Internet searches proved a bit fruitless, anyone any ideas, or does anyone get Kies to work flawlessly each time??

I never tried Kies and I never heard a single good opinion about it...

    What about this one: LINK

Mollser I empathise as I've exactly the same problems here and I've the original Galaxy S. I love my phone but I hate Kies it's the worst thing I've ever used!

I got KIES to work eventually. Had to backup over 10 times before it had successfully backed up everything that I required. Couldn't get it to backup apps though so had to leave that one out. Very easy to re-install them though.

Root and flash your phone and you'll never have to worry about kies again.

Used some software called MobileGo for Android (Wondershare) and got the basics backed up, along with the apps.

Did factory reset and now it connects with Kies easy enough. Just picked through the apps in Google Play that I actually use to re-download, was only about 10% of them!

So now a spanky fresh new phone, battery is at 85% after coming off the charger at 7am, and its fast and fluid. (battery was the only problem I was really having anyway)

Having all those apps downloaded cannot be good for the phone!
