So I'm in the market for a car overseas CC is not really too much of an issue, however the car prices are crazy high over here so reasonably restricted as to what I can afford which are realistically going to be pre '98 models.

    I'm Considering:

    1991/1993 Daihatsu Feroza / Fourtrack 1.6l appx 3000 euro.
    1992/1996 BMW 316 / 320 (with the full leathers/bells and whistles) appx 4,500 euro
1991/1992 BMW 525 (with the full leathers/bells and whistles) appx 4,500 euro
1996/1998 Honda Civic appx 3500 euro
1996/1998 Mistubishi Lancer / Galant appx 3500 euro

Given the choice what do you think I should go for in reliability/comfort cost of running ?

I'd probably go for a Galant out of those choices...those prices are :eek::eek::eek:

+1 on the Galant. My uncle had one in Libya, put over 400,000km on it, very reliable car.

Out of that list, the Honda Civic all day long. For sheer reliability and low maintainance/running costs it won't be beaten.

    Same here, grudgingly.

    Going to add
91-96 Mitsubishi Pajero 2.5TD to the list @ around 4000 Euro (deals to be had sometimes on 3dr)
    93-98 Suzuki Vitara/Samurai @ around 2500-3500 Euro.

It's a very strange mix of cars. There's a huge difference between a top spec 525 and a civic, what is most important about the car?

Civic/Galant - well they are reasonably priced and I guess an OK A > B car nothing special.

I guess my preference TBH is probably one of the BMW's, I had a '93 316i a few years ago and loved the feeling of "driving" the thing till some 'lil knackers burnt it out on me.

My gut feeling is that a slightly higher end car over here (due to crazy high initial cost) is (a) less likely to have the crap driven out of it (b) most are single owners from new (c) Most are top spec when bought (d) Generally are kept in really good Condition and Serviced when they should be by reputable garages rather than side street ones.

The Jeeps - Almost all of the roads anywhere outside the city/highways are just pure crap, think Cavan in the 90's plus a million and we hope to use this to travel around a bit, a 4x4 is probably overkill but who knows.
