Playing laptop on tv

I have asked this question a few months ago but nothing worked. So I'm trying to watch a movie again from my laptop on my tv and the sound won't play out through the TV...only through the laptop.

I've gone through every sound setting possible on my laptop and I can't seem to get the tv speakers activated.

So i go into control panel > hardware and sound > sound > playback and the options are digital audio (HDMI) and speakers. There is a red arrow on the Digital Audio HDMI icon but a green arrow on the speakers icon. It seems I need to activate the Digital Audio HDMI but it won't let me.

Has anyone any idea how I can get the sound to come through the tv? The picture is coming through fine. Sound used to come through ok a few months ago but for some reason it doesn't now. I'm stumped & would appreciate any help.

    Thanks

You can also just right click on the volume button on the start bar and click playback devices, rather than go the long way around it.

Red arrows signify a disconnected device. Either way, you set the default device to get the sound to push through it.

Right click on the device for properties. In the properties window go into properties again. Click the Option to Change Settings (Administrator access needed), and go to the driver tab and click to update the driver for a start. These prompts should hopefully also say "The Device is working properly".

Hopefully that uncovers something. Windows 7? Vista?

I've had this problem and know how to solve it.
You need to disable the speakers on your laptop BEFORE connecting to the tv and BEFORE launching the movie player on the laptop.
Go to control panel -> sound -> speakers -> properties and in device usage pick disable.
Now connect hdmi and it will pick up the speakers on the tv.
When you disconnect go back and enable the laptop speakers.

Thanks. I'll try both of these suggestions later this evening and I'll post my findings incase anyone has similar issues in future.

Tried both of these things but neither working.
Apparently the driver is already installed.
I've disabled speakers but HDMI device is 'not plugged in' apparently, even though it's enabled. Red arrow showing on it still.
I've the laptop hooked up to the tv and the picture is showing fine. I'm using a HDMI cable.
Any other thoughts on how I could get this to work?
    Thanks!

P.S. under High Definition Audio Device properties it says "this device is working properly".

no ideas. sorry. did you wait until you connected hdmi to pc after diablling speakers before launching the media player?
if you launch it before that it may not work.

Yes I have done all of this. Nothing works unfortunately. I may just bring it to a laptop repair place and see do they know what's up. Thanks

Yep I have. I've also tested the HDMI cable in someone else's laptop and it's working fine. It's a bit of a mystery!
