Grips - Regripping Irons

I need to re-grip my irons and think I will do it myself to keep cost down.

From searches on here the Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord seem very popular and I do like them myself. Any other suggestions, as any threads I found were quite old and perhaps there is a newer more popular grip since?

I am looking for mid-size, and will probably do them myself, although I have never re-gripped before, but it looks simple.

Golf Pride Multi Compound - Your only man !

They look the job. Cord at the top and soft rubber at the bottom.

They are about €9 each on ebay. Can anyone recommend somewhere online to purchase?

Gamola Golf £6.73 each. I've bought stuff from them before and I think he's reasonable on postage.

    http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/acatalog/Golf_Pride_Multicompound_Golf_Grips.html

£8 to post 9 grips. Free post to UK on orders over £75. He wont do free to ROI but he's very negotiable. I bought a Ping driver from him before with a tenner postage.

One word of warning regarding the Golf Pride Multi Compound, great grips but they do wear out quite quickly. Worth bearing in mind as can be expensive to regrip a full set of irons.
Also there are alot of imitation copies on ebay and elsewhere so best stick with a trusted retailer. I don't have any first hand experience but gamolagolf.co.uk seems to get mentioned on here alot.

they got good feed back, 99.9% with so many Transactions seem legit enough, hard to say for def though.

That price is good and GolfGearForLess are a reputable outfit. You'll have to contact the seller for international postage rates. If he charges £7 postage that'll make it £65. GamolaGolf will charge £70 incl postage.

I have the red/black ones. A matter of preference I know but I would imagine white grips will quickly become grey grips ;)

£4.99 European postage. True about the white, might go for red.

    You've dealt with GolfGearForLess before?

Look at the Sharpros also from Gamola. You get what seems basically the same grip for a third of the price of the Golf Pride.

Now I say 'it seems' because I only put them on a week ago myself and can't speak for quality and how they compare to the Golf Prides in the long run.

But do a bit of googling on them. Some guys saying the even have the patent on the Multi Compound and that Golf Pride are actually paying a license to them.

Make of that what you want, but I'm after putting them and first impression is they're the same. They have better colors, too.
And I paid just under €40 for 13 grips including shipping. Plus a fiver for 36 yards of tape.

open a parcel motel a/c for all free shipping to u.k .€3.50 a delivery and post seems to arrive quicker...

Yea they're sound. Bought a few bits and bobs over the last few years from them. Make sure you indicate whether you want standard or mid size grips. I'm sure he sells double sided tape to fit them. He has a shop on ebay:

That's great. thanks very much. I think I will go with those as I don't play much golf, maybe once or twice a month. If I was playing a lot I wouldn't mind paying more, but the price of the Golf Pride grips was off putting.

There is no option to select the size I want, would I just state that it's midsize I want?

I did similar a few years ago and bought the Sharpros. They're a good bit cheaper and I thought they were the same. I just got a new set of clubs with the Golf Pride version and I think they're much superior to the SharproS. The cord is more rough and the rubber more tacky which creates a great grip IMO.

I think they have the midsize ones explicitly listed, I would therefore assume not all of them (colors) are available in midsize. They will probably also differ slightly in price. Browse through the shop and you will find the midsized ones. I went for the standard ones myself, big enough for me.

Also the re-gripping was really easy and the result is perfect which I kinda knew after watching a pro doing it once. Not much to it really.

Is the cord in the upper parts of the grip specifically for your glove?
I don't wear a glove and wonder would I be better with just the tacky rubber grip and no cord?

Not so, I had the red/black grip on my driver for a while and when the soft rubber was badly worn around the thumb mark I replaced it with the white/black grip. After about 8 months of use the grip is still bright and white apart from around the thumb mark which has obvious signs of wear and scuffing.
Guess I need to work on my grip pressure and in particular the right thumb.

I can't quite confirm that tbh.

I bought 13 of them to save (future) shipping, but only regripped my woods and my wedges as the Golf Prides on my irons are almost new. I can't say I feel much of a difference if any, certainly nothing like 'much superior'.

There are a couple of threads on thesandtrap and you get the whole variety of opinions. Fellas saying what you're saying. Then Fellas saying they're same and then some guys saying the Sharpos are the superior ones. Conclusion for me was that its probably very much personal preference rather than hard facts.

Like I said they feel very very similar to me.

P.S. But I won't start a debate on it either, I'd rather play them first for a season or two. The price difference justified the 'gamble' for me.
PPS. I'm just after bringing the bag in and I'm looking at both of them and I'm feeling both of them up :) and while very similar I must say the cord part on the Golf Prides does indeed feel a little grippier. The rubber not so much.

Would the particular multi compound grip we are talking about be suitable for someone who does not wear a glove?

I can't answer that one but I think you'd be better off wearing a glove and getting used to it. The glove hand is what grips the club and the purpose of the glove is to increase grip.

I know a guy (right handed) who used to wear a glove on his right hand. Absolutely pointless.

Back to the Sharpros - GolfGear4Less doesn't seem to sell them. Gamola does:

    http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/acatalog/Sharpro_Multicompound_Dual_Compound_Cord_Golf_Grips.html

There is a link to the left for mid size but it doesn't seem to work so best to phone or email them before ordering.

If I wasn't wearing a glove I probably wouldn't like the cord bit too much. I'd probably use something like the tour velvet then (full rubber). I think the upper cord part is specifically designed to work with a glove.

At the minute I'm siding with the Sharpros multi and try to wear my glove which is in the pocket of my bag since I bought it (lasted 9 holes with it). I'll sleep on it tonight before I buy and see does anyone else have any advice to offer.

Wonderful help lads to a first time poster, thanks.

Last word before bedtime. Are you sure your glove is the right fit for you?

Yeah I was happy enough with fitment, it's not loose but not stretched either. How tight/loose should it be?

Have seen the Black Widow grips for a good price on Adverts are they legit? There is also some gut on there that will fit them for very little over the cost of the grip.

I went for the Sharpro Multi Compound Midsize in black/white.

    9 grips for €40 delivered.

    SDCPTO-w.jpg

Also I got 10 grip tapes and a vice grip on ebay for €10. Can I use white spirits instead of the solvent I see for sale on ebay?

Not bad grips at all, good price, White spirit will do fine.

White spirit is perfect. When you scrape off the old tape, the white spirit will remove all the residue glue.

    Best method:

Place the double sided tape over the cleaned shaft at around a 30 degree angle
Fill the grips with white spirit keeping your finger over the hole
Pour the white spirit from the grip over the taped shaft (over a basin !)
Slide the grips on quickly and twist into the correct alignment
    Leave to dry (5 mins)

BTW Whats the vice grips for?

The tapes I'm getting are cut already individually, so I reckon they cover the whole shaft under the grip, so no need to go at an angle.

Haha sorry I didn't mean a vice grip, I meant a grip for the vice....

    +1

IMHO there is no comparison quality wise between the Sharpros and the Golf Pride - the Sharpro is much harder rubber and not tacky and not much cord on the upper half. Saying that I think the GPs are very over priced for what they are and I've gone back to GP Tour Velvet - great value for money.

That is the exact one that I have - works a treat and the clamp is rubber also so the shaft doesn't get damaged.

    16id4dy.jpg

This is the Black Widow Edge grip (6iron) after about 4 sessions on the range, and 6 rounds of golf.
seems a lot of wear, considering i dont just use a 6 iron.
Love the tackiness, but they are too soft, dirty, very thin, and just generally flimsy feeling.
