Repaired Phone. All photos lost

My father sent his Xperia S to Sony for repair via Meteor. Had the phone for a few months and had been using it as his primary camera during that time. The phone failed to turn on one day due to a fault. It took 5 weeks for the phone to be returned, during which time he was using a Samsung piece of crap. Got the phone back this evening and all the photos from holidays and times with family are all gone, along with all the messages.

Is this standard procedure for a faulty phone? Because the xperia s only has internal memory (32gb), there was no possibility of rescuing the material. Thoughts on this? I'm guessing the photos are gone for good, but this isn't right surely?

I'd say the photos are gone forever. It's fairly standard practice for people to reinstall software in order to fix a problem, and the responsibility was on your father to back up his data & photos.

It's a harsh lesson, but that's the way it is.

+1 Repair centres will NEVER take responsibility for user data.

There is zero chance of getting them back. Learn your lesson and set up some sore of instant upload using Google+, Dropbox, etc. there are other apps too.

If he had google plus setup the photos automatically upload, check just on the off chance that he did
