Right, so I was looking at my statement the other day. Saw something that really pissed me off.

    03/01/12 - Government Stamp Duty - €2.50

I wasn't aware that the government could just take money from my account as easy as that. Anyway, I'm thinking they can go fück themselves, so I'm planning on taking my money out in cash, and keeping it in a safe at home. Im only 17, so it's not hundreds of thousands.

Anyway, what d'youse reckon? Good idea or bad idea? Why?

Wait till you actually have some money in it you'll see exactly what the government can do.

Keeping all your money at home is just plain stupid to be honest.

And when you get a private pension, they'll help themselves to that too.

That's exactly it. What need is there for it in all honesty?

Not worried about burglars. Concealed safe ( and weapon) do the trick.

Can your weapon put our fires?

Your bank obviously doesn't charge for use of your account. I have a yearly debit card and credit card charge, up until recently as wasn't jumping through their hoops charges of up to €20-30 per qtr, DIRT on my interest earned of 30%, and now to their cost cutting, even harder to deal with a real person when going into their branches.

It could piss me off as well because I have already been robbed in many other ways by successive governments. However, as you go through life it is important to try and find the right balance in these things - otherwise you will be a very unhappy person.

You could maybe accept things as they are and get on with more important things in your life because after all, €2.50 of a charge is not that bad. Otherwise, take out your money and invest it in some of those tax-free Post Office savings schemes.

The €2.50 is for your ATM card. I know AIB pays it for me as I am on a student account although I pay €5 €2.50 for the ATM and €2.50 for the POS side of the card.

yes, yes, someone has to pay for the 13th Month

I think if you don't use your ATM card in a calendar year, you don't have to pay it for that year.
So you don't have to take all your money out, just go into the bank and fill out a withdrawal slip every time instead.

No need to put out fires, safe is fire proof.

As for getting money in Limerick : Theoretically it could

Bad idea, you will never build up a credit history without having a bank account. So when you go looking for a car loan, holiday loan, mortgage etc you wont get it because you have no credit/banking history.

jesus op you're 17 probably live at home with your parents have your bills paid for you and hot dinners made for you, clothes washed etc why is 2.50 so important to you

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,559 ✭✭✭✭AnonoBoy

Sure once upon a time our minister for finance had no bank account what would a young lad need with one? :)

Of course paying bills, booking flights, ordering anything online will become nigh on impossible without one but that's just the life you choose to live when you're saving cash.

You think thats bad? I've got this Loch Ness monster from the Paleozoic era hounding me all week for tree fiddy...

Yeah op you need to see life in a bigger brighter picture. At 17 I was only worried about Boobs and beer and the joys of having an ATM card that could get me them :D

Its €2:50 for the ease of access to your money through any ATM in the country/world, most people would drop that and more over the space of a year and not b1tch and moan about it on here!!!!

Second of all the government don't have access to your accounts, only you and the bank do, the bank take it out and pay the stamp duty to the government, its in the T&C's. They could make you do it yourself. Its €2.50 for an ATM card €5 for a ATM/Debit card and €30 for a credit card.

Think of all these people getting robbed lately they have no problem knocking the sh1t out of an oap they certainly wont be phased by a 17 year old.

Also if you are giving out about €2.50 how in the hell could you justify buying a safe.

Ah yes to be 17 again and worrying about €2.50 going missing....just wait young lad , they haven't even heated up the rod for you yet..

Sure just there in December they told me they want several hundred out of my pay for something called 'Property tax' and here's the kicker....it doesn't even provide a service to me!! It's just made up....

Governement Duties on credit and debit cards are bad enough (just another tax on those of us so fabulously wealthy we can have access to fancy cards) but what really "grinds my gears" is shops that have a minimum purchase necessary to use a debit card.

I know that retailers do get charged for accepting card payments but retailers, card operators, banks and the Govt need to get their act together and make it much easier to use cards. I've been in supermarkets, with no cash, in-store atm broken and my shopping amounts to €8.50 or so........"Sorry, we only accept debit cards for purchases over €10". "So what do you want me to do?"
