Some great news released from MIC today.

Mary Immaculate College is delighted to announce its intention to acquire a major property which will enhance its city centre campus. The College is to purchase the former Mount Convent Complex from the Sisters of Mercy. The landmark 19th Century building is adjacent to the College and covers approximately 4000 square metres.

Among the possibilities that this acquisition will offer the College is the opportunity to bring all postgraduate activities together into one space and to significantly advance provision in this area. It will also increase office space for faculty. From a strategic perspective, the extension of the estate will bring the campus footprint onto O’Connell Avenue, the main city thoroughfare, raising the profile of the College as a prominent physical feature of Limerick City and, more importantly, as integral to the currency of the wider community. This message has been conveyed by the College in a series of recent improvements to its estate, including completion of the 500-seat Lime Tree theatre, and the reconstruction and lowering of its boundary wall, both accompanied by an invitation to the wider public to view the campus as a shared community space and amenity.

Above all, the latest enhancement of the physical infrastucture at MIC is designed to serve the central mission of the College by enhancing the learning and living environment for students and staff. Affirming that good College governance involves having one’s heart in the past, feet in the present and eyes on the future, Prof. Michael A Hayes, President of MIC, said: “The College is delighted to announce its intention to purchase this property. This is very much consistent with the College’s Strategic Plan 2012-2016. One of the pillars of the College’s Strategic Plan sets out to enhance the College’s learning environment and provide a workplace of the highest quality. Another aims to improve the quality of Mary Immaculate College’s postgraduate student experience. This strategically important acquisition is an indication of our growing confidence as an institution.”

An extra 4000sqm of campus is a very welcome addition.
It'll also mean there will be access to MIC and the SCRd from O'Connell avenue.

That's very interesting. I've no doubt that there will be some raised eyebrows over it.

Without doubt, there'll be many a raised eyebrow!
Nice to see the campus expanding though!

I wonder if this now means that they'll open that little avenue from Gerard House to O'Connell Avenue. :D
    It'll make a nice shortcut!
