Advice on Health Insurance

Health Insurance due for renewal. Live in the sticks- nearest hospital is a public one. Other people I know with VHI packages have had to wait at least 3 months now on procedures. I thought the whole idea of health insurance was that you would not have to wait too long to get any procedures done. I was planning on going for a basic package as I do not care about private rooms etc. I realise that if I want to go to a private hospital I will need a top of the range policy to limit the amount I will have to fork out for a procedure. My question bascially is do I need to get health insurance if I am going to be put on a waiting list anyway. A nurse at the local hospital said health insurance makes no difference on waiting time there. Any advice would be gratefully accepted. Thanks.
