Used Renault Clios - absurd prices?

    Hi folks,

Girlfriend looking for her first car - possibly something on the cheap side as she's still learning her trade and will inevitably end up tearing the living daylights out of the poor vehicle.

She's got a thing for Renault Clios. We were looking at a few of them up for sale and the prices...well, 2000+ Euro for a 2002 1.2L Clio with a boatload of miles seem absolutely of the the world.

Are Clios really so much sought after? I understand that the small engine is gonna be quite convenient and cheap to feed, maintain, insure and tax - and the car itself looks kinda "pretty" in a girly way, but still the prices seem extremely high to me.

Also, I tried to suggest alternatives - so far she liked Peugeot 206s and Ford Kas, which seem to be suffering from the same "ungodly high price syndrome". Any suggestions about what other models I can try and submit for her consideration? (no Micras, Yaris nor Starlets, thanks!)

Also, if anybody stumbled upon an ad for a decent Clio for sale in the Cork area for a reasonable price, I would be tankful if you can point me to it!

    Thanks in advance :D

These two comments are complete polar opposites.

I know, but I can't do anything about it. She recoils in horror when presented with the said cars.

A couple of mates of mine have had their Clio's for the past few years, even though they Clio's drive lika a go-kart they swear by the yokes.

OP why not consider a Micra, cheap to buy, maintain and fix.

    Colt?
The one in the link is pricey, but a tidy colt looks well (IMO), not slow, and should be very reliable?

I sold my 02 Clio 3 years ago for 2250€, I can see that they have kept a good value.
Clio2 are indeed economical to run/tax/insure/maintain and don't looks too bad for the year, maybe that's why they are looked at. The 1.2 16v engine is the perfect balance between fuel economy and performance.
They are good cars but well, at the end it's a 10 years old Renault so if they haven't been looked after, just walk away.
Avoid the models with a manual sunroof, they tend to leak and it's impossible to fix, and sealing the roof doesn't help.

The Toyota Yaris is the most over-looked and under-rated car in that group IMHO. We used to have one; it sipped fuel and only ever needed a brake light outside of normal services. In retrospect we should never have parted with it. Nice eager little engine too, like a little puppy, eager to please although wearing on a longish journey.

My GF bought a 1.2 2001 clio last year for €800. Tested for year, new tyres etc. Still going strong!

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
