    Ok,
I may be being paranoid but something about this just seems a bit fishy!

currently have my car up for sale on Carzone/done deal etc and got an email asking about the price.
Replyed to this and then got an email back sayingthat he wanted to buy the car but would pay by bank draft..... (begin getting suspicious)
next I ask "do you not want to look at the car??".... (more suspicion)

He replys, No I have seen the pictures and want to buy the car. can you send your address etc so that I can send payment.

He claims that he will organise shipping.

I have told him that I will not release the car until payment has cleared and he has still replied that he wants to buy the car.

Am I being paranoid or is this a scam, ever happened to anybody on here??

My head is telling me to run a mile!!!

Basically when you pay for the "shipping company" the buyer will disappear. Then the bank will say the bank draft or cheque is fake and they will take the money away. You will have lost the amount of the shipping and the buyer isn't even interested in the car.

Complete scam, don't even bother with the email contact option on Done Deal / Gumtree / Carzone because it's a common targeted scam option.

Send him back a fake shipping receipt. Could keep it going for weeks.

There was a guy who did that kind of thing, stringing scammers along. He wrote a book about it.

I had one tried on me back home, then a similar thing out here a couple of months ago when I was buying a car actually. There's always shipping involved, as well as some long winded story about why they are buying it.

In any case, I can only ever read them in this guys voice...

Yes it is a scam. Unless you found a right idot who agrees to buy a car he hasn't even seen, at the seller's asking price and isn't even in the country.

Tell him you will happily take 100 magic beans and a Jack Russell as payment. :)

I love playing these guys along until I get sick of it. Told a guy once that the cow had a calf in the back seat. Made no difference, he was still intent on buying it. Ignore unless you want to have a bit of fun for a few days.

Tell him you happen to be going on holiday to near the shipping adress he gives you and that you'll turn it in to a road trip and hand deliver the car after the money clears, saving him the shipping costs. :-)

    Obviously a scam. Nonetheless....

Last year my Dad was selling his old '00 Golf on DD, good car he owned it from new, straight, the mileage was high though.
Buyer rang from Athlone asked about the car, said he'd buy it on the condition that it would be delivered to Athlone(from Galway). All this was agreed over the phone.

Anyway my Dad arrives in Athlone, presents the car to the buyer who is a little shocked by the 180K miles on the clock!(The mileage wasn't listed on the DD advert, not intentionally hidden mind, more so because my Dad wouldn't be the most descriptive of authors. And bizarrely during the phone inquiry the buyer didn't ask what mileage was on the car.)
Regardless the buyer paid the agreed amount then brought my Dad to the bus station and even paid for the bus fare back home to Galway!

I guess there are all types of buyers and sellers out there. Be vigilant but also be aware that some buyers my not be as meticulous as yourself.

I hate seeing adds with no mileage listed
I always believe it isnt listed for a reason.

Yeah I would be the same way.
However as above my Dad genuinely forgot to list the mileage though to a buyers perspective not listing 180K mile would, rightly so, ring an alarm bell. Nevertheless the car was straight as a die and a good buy.

Was between jobs so had a few weeks of found a beautiful BMW 520D leather all extras very low mileage on carzone no phone number so replied by email. Lots more photos car sounded even better than in add but there was a catch the car was in Spain. But I could transfer money in to an escrow account thats used by yahoo so it ligimate the car is so good that its guarantee I will want it.
Seller will ship car to my address and I have a week to check it out and if I like it I then inform escrow company to release the funds so no ri as k to me. Again seller is so confident the car is perfect he knows I will buy it but on the off chance I dont the seller will arrange to collect the car at no cost to me snd I can just inform escrow company to refund my money.

Emails went back and forth then I decided sure ive time off I'll fly to spain make a holiday out of it and buy car. Then the seller became cold made every excuse that I couldnt do this but it could be still shipped to me.

I use escrow in work and it is usually a bank that does this type of tranaction but the details given where email account and web address.

At this stage I realise it was bogus so reported the add. Two weeks later this scam was televised on bbc. But it made me wonder how many got caught with this. I rechecked carezone and found another 5 adds with similar no phone numbers no address cars all low mileage top of range and low price for year. 5k euro. There was even some cars with same back ground looked like a car hire place that someone had taken photos of different modles.

It turned out the so call escrow company was front so once you transfered money its gone.
There is no car just photos of someone elses car.
English police traced details back to Nigeria

Im sure many got done on this as there is a few variations

I had a young girl that wanted to buy an 00 clio I was selling. She started haggling on the phone before she even seen the car, we agreed on a price and she said she'd be there in an hour to pick it up. I asked do you know much about cars or have you someone who know about cars to come along with you, of course she hadn't and hadn't a notion about cars. All she wanted was to buy a car "any car" before she had to give her mothers car back that night.
I started asking had she any friends who know about cars etc etc to come along and in the end, I think she got pissed off and just went to the next car on donedeal, and just bough it instead.
Some people are just too stupid for their own good.

Well that sounds good but the problem is that the shipping company does not accept the item or merchandise they want to come and pick up money, so maybe you should please try and set up a paypal account at www.paypal.com and if you already have an account with them just send me the email address you use for the registration so i can pay in.

    Maria
Not going to work, I have paypal but the cash is required as paypal will charge me loads on fees.
    thanks

I will be paying the PayPal charges from my account and i will be paying directly into your PayPal account without any delay, and i hope you have a paypal account. If you have one already, just send me the address to send it to, which is the email address you use for it or you can send me a paypal money request, so once i receive the details i will go ahead with the payment through PayPal and then i will contact my shipping company after you get the payment. I will need your home address for it to be Picked Up by the Shipping Company..

I will be paying the PayPal charges from my account and i will be paying directly into your PayPal account without any delay. I will need your home address for it to be Picked Up by the Shipping Company as they are suppose to pickup the Car 2 to 3 days after I make the Booking and here is my address also if you will need it for the Agreement Form:

    Name: Maria Laura
    Address : 41 Station Road,Solihull.
    City : Birmingham
    Postal Code : B91 3RT
    Country : United Kingdom.

I will proceed with the PayPal payment as soon as i receive the PayPal payment notification to my PayPal email (ria.datz.gr@gmail.com) or
you send me the following details to make the payment
    PayPal email
    PayPal name
    amount to send
    item description

    Await your response asap.
    Thanks,
    Maria.

    Maria,

Yeah, this is a common one now. I had a friend sell something on Ebay and was accepting payment through Paypal. He sent on his Paypal account number to the guy looking to buy it so he could transfer teh payment and a couple of days later got an official looking mail allegedly from Paypal looking for him to send on his password details as there was suspicious activity on his account and they needed to verify that he was the correct owner of the Paypal account.

    Total scam.

I had the same thing last time I sold a car on donedeal, got the email saying no need to look saw the pics and would pay full price and organise shipping to some foreign country lol.
Had the same on ebay when I sold a phone, some guy from L.A wanted to buy it for his son in Africa and then sent me a fake paypal email saying the money had been credited to my account. which obviously it wasn't so just reported him to ebay and paypay and sent copies of everything he sent me to them and just got the account blocked.
But more than likely he just opened another one. I do wonder do some people actually fall for these stupid scams.

Of course they do, or these guys wouldn't be trying them. They only need a miniscule per centage of idiots to actually go through with some sort of payment out of the thousands of attempts, to make it worth their while.

I find if the mileage is high its usually not listed in the advert as they want you to call and hopefully persuade you to look at it but if its low mileage believe me they wont forget to put it in
