I dunno. Maybe I'm just getting old, so, I notice it more.

But,it seems, that a lot of people who were here for the last six or seven years are closing their accounts recently.

    Has AH lost it's way?

Or, more importantly, has it lost it's sense of humour?

(Tits, bums, yore ma, or a genuinely funny word like Bingo)

People get tired and move on I guess. They say there's life outside of the boardsvault for those brave enough to go look.

Do a search, have a look at AH threads from 6/7 years ago and they're the same as now. The same topics keep coming up. AH is incredibly boring for anyone who has been here a while. Having said that there is a couple of great threads every year.

Think I've seen this thread fairly recently, forget who started it though.

There has been a thread on this a few times :) AH is very cyclical.

Someone should make a thread on best usernames/how did you choose your username in AH. That would be epic.

I think you'll find a thread on why weed should be legalised would be much much better.

Lots of people are uncomfortable with the amount of personal information they've given out on here and the amount of history they've built up over six or seven years. So they close the account and start again. Only a few of them have actually left.

A lot of people leave and come back under a different name. Boards is too addictive to stay away from.

    Three things:

One posters are mostly students or transients, once a project, school or college is compete, they see boards in a new and distasteful light.

Boards have increased moderation so it's impossible to have a debate that is even on zillionth above the average intelligence level of the ruling clique of posters.

Boards have released the IP address of posters at the request of certain parties, you are no longer fully anonymous on boards, which is a good thing, I've called for photo ID in the past already.

Distasteful? Meh, more like they get bored, or have simply less time to apply to posting, or they post more in private forums(quite a bit of the latter)
Boards have increased moderation so it's impossible to have a debate that is even on zillionth above the average intelligence level of the ruling clique of posters.
While sometimes I see a thread closed where I go "ahh what was the issue there" and some forums have a low enough standard, other forums have a higher standard than before and often that's down to the moderation. There's less "your ma" guff due to moderation, but I see that as a good thing.
Boards have released the IP address of posters at the request of certain parties, you are no longer fully anonymous on boards, which is a good thing, I've called for photo ID in the past already.
We were never anonymous. Indeed way back in the day ordinary mods could see IP addresses. No longer and not for a long time. Now only admins and boards staff can see them. Privacy has gone up, not down and some of that came from mods themselves. On the releasing of IP addresses by Boards they will only do that if legally and officially requested to do so by the law of the state. They do not hand them out to anyone and have fought a court case over this(MCD). They didn't have to either and it could have gone tits up for them and cost serious money and may have shut the site down.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

This place has seriously gone downhill, there seems to be a lot more assholes now. I blame Facebook, there has been a huge influx of Facebook retards, ie people who wouldn't be on the internet at all if it wasn't for Facebook. They've finally made their way here. I think they are the same annoying fools who bombarded you with sms bullshít 10 years ago, then went on to spam Facebook with bullshít and now they post their bullshít and backward opinions here.

I think this is the biggest reason. I unwittingly lost my account in 2010 but it did no harm as looking back at the old username, there was a lot of stuff there I would never post up now.

Some people give out too much personal info over their Boards career and feel the need to start over with a clean slate.

I don't have that problem seeing as I'm a very closed off, unemotional sort of man.

I say for the majority it was they couldn't post in peace without someone dragging up something they said in a thread 5 years ago. Also there is people who hold grudges on boards.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,340 ✭✭✭Please Kill Me

I know a few are getting tired of thread/posts being OVER-moderated. I understand the need for moderation most of the time, but some of them go too far. People get sick of this, so don't bother any more.

I've came and gone a few times (accounts wise!). I've had three accounts with over a thousand posts each.

I like reading boards but as posters above said, I've seen most threads done a million times. It's a great site for information though and some threads are a good laugh.

My first post on boards was 13 years ago and I can still find it!

I find it sneaky and disconcerting when people close their accounts and open a new one so they can have a clean slate.

If you have a certain reputation on boards then there is a reason for it, you've earned it and now deal with it.

Of course that might just be because there are plenty of posters I don't like and I get annoyed when they re-register and I might accidentally thank one of their posts ;)

They should separate Boards usernames from Adverts usernames. Using Adverts exposes the ID of the poster easily to the real world, puts off using Adverts.

Depends what you're here for, After Hours isn't the be all and end all of boards. You find yourself branching out to other sites where things can be a bit more relaxed and specialised, DE Shaving forums, in my case, where members from here would know me by name and whom I've met. My interest started here though.

There are other ways of dealing with it than account-closing surely?
Not referring to any specific cases ere btw, just speaking generally.

There are, certainly, but sometimes I imagine it's easier just close your account. It shouldn't be seen as a bad thing. It might be frustrating for other posters, but at the end of the day you have to put yourself and your online safety first and foremost.

I'd say the strict moderation and cliques. Offend a certain clique of posters and one click of the sneaky report button and you're banned.

Not asking for any names or anything, but were they AH posters ? and was the bullying delivered through personal messages or thinly veiled insults on threads ?
