Changing Roles in IT

Not 100% sure this is the right forum, but perhaps people might have some insight or experience.

Lately I'm giving thought to changing roles. I'm currently working in a front-line support role in a financial services outfit (front line support, creating development specs, manual GUI testing, etc) I have no exposure to actual coding (bar using SQL) in this job, and i'd like to make a move to a more technical role, as I am familiar with and interested in programming languages (mainly .Net, Java, some basic python and C++), but haven't had a chance to develop these professionally yet.

Ideally i'd like to move into a QA type role, but i'm not sure how exactly I can get the foot in the door in terms of professional experience. In college I was an A student in programming (.Net and Java), but I'm not sure of the level required when going for a job. Would my support experience help here?
