Change of job, change of car

    Hi All,

I got a new job. Its closer to home and pretty much on a straight road (Navan - Blanch) its roughly a 80km round trip. My question is, I have a 1.6 petrol car. Would it be a good move to buy a Diesel?

I'm Looking at a 1.9 TDI golf. Would this be a wise move, or is the distance not worth buying a diesel for?

Would the money you'd save in petrol not be offset by the cost of the car and tax?

I wet diesel for a similar purpose (Naaaaaaaaaaaavan to St Stephens green)

Used to run a few petrol yokes up and down.

Fuel bills are much the same but I do far more mileage now then I used to (800km a week average vs 500km in the van) for similar money. Factor the fact petrol then was near 1.70 a litre and diesel now is usually 1.53 into that equation, there still is a saving to be made.

Don't bother with the M3, use the old N3 :)

That's grand if you have the time/patience for being stuck behind the oul dears dawdling along or the fact that as it's now an 80 km/h road, the camera vans are all over it.

I did Fairview - just beyond Kells last year and would have been lost without the M3 (despite the added expense of tolls). Aside from the extra time lost by using the "old road", I wouldn't have the patience for the above. I could do the trip in 70 mins door-to-door most days.

At least on the M3 it's practically deserted most of the time, especially the further out you go. Like having your own private motorway!

Definitely go diesel for that OP, and bear in mind that you'll want something decent to handle the extra wear and tear. Parts of that M3 aren't great either and be wary in the wet as there's a lot of surface water.

I'm a miserable git who hates paying tolls and the relaxed driving style of the car doesn't encourage you to drive it hard. Those auld biddies are easily dealt with if needs be :)

Each to their own I guess! :p
