RAM Upgrade (Need some info)

    Hi guys,

Sorry if this has been posted before or if I'm in the wrong place.

I bought an ASUS K56C laptop today and want to upgrade the RAM.

It's got an i5 3317U 1.7Ghz processor and currently has 4GB of memory.

Basically, I need to know what type of RAM I need (do they come in different sizes, etc), where to get it and how much would work best with my processor?

I play some games off steam from time to time, use some relatively heavy development programs like Visual Studio and that. Not sure if that matters.

Any help in picking out something would be really appreciated!

    Cheers guys! :)

    Paula.

Have a look here. Based in Ireland and decent prices.

I would agree memoryc are the business, have got a lot of bits off tyhem over the years. They're based in Maynooth as well which is handy if you want to collect.

Your laptop can handle up to 8 GB of DDR3 1600 MHz max, so a 2 x4GB kit like this would be ideal.

Is the kit really the way to go?
Would adding another 4gb in the empty slot not work?

Doh, forgot about the existing 4GB, this then based on the ASUS spec. Time to retire for the night I think.:)

    Cheers guys! :)

So do you reckon there's two slots on the laptop, one currently with a 4GB chip?

    Or are there 3 slots?

Sorry for the noob questions! :P

One slot that currently has 4gb in it with one free slot is the norm for laptops so that's my guess.

physically check before you order as it could be 2gb in both slots currently

Or you could go to www.crucial.com and they can detect whats in your laptop and the best upgrade options for you.

You need to check both RAM bays are not used with 2x2GB modules. While with laptops this isn't always that common it is sometimes done.

4GB of ram should be loads, just don't be disappointed when your upgrade provides no benefit. Your main bottleneck is most likely the laptop 2 core processor. A cheap desktop will perform a hell of a lot better with visual studio etc.

Make sure your OS is 64 bit as well or it won't be able to recognise more than 4gb's of ram.

Just curious, it says on the Intel documentation that the i5 3317U can support up to 32GB of RAM. Are there other factors that mean it can only support 8GB, like the type of RAM or that?

The cpu is limited by the amount of ram the motherboard can support.
