    Dia dhaoibh!

Leígh mé an dráma seo den chéad uair i mbliana agus thaitin sé go mór liom! Faraor, tá rud beag faoi ag cur isteach orm. Sin, an bhfuil Máire beo nó marbh i rith an dráma?

Tá dúnmharú á chur ina leith agus is 'príosiúnach' í ach má chuir sí lámh ina bás féin ní féidir leí a bheith ar thriail sa chéad áit? Cathain a fuair sí bás agus cé atá ar thriail?

B'fhéidir gur cheist amaideach í ach ar aon nós tá sé ag cur isteach orm!

Translation: I read the drama An Triail this year and really enjoyed it although one thing is particular is niggling at me. Máire: is she dead or alive throughout the drama? She's accused of murder and referred to frequently as the 'prisoner' but if she committed suicide the trial wouldn't have been on in the first place? When exactly did she die and who is on trial if she is not? Can a dead person be trialed for murder?!

Perhaps it's a silly question with an obvious explanation, but had to put it out there!

Tá sí marbh i rith an dráma, tá an triail ag tarlú tar éis a tharla na imeachtaí, agus fecimid an chuid eile den scéal mar 'flashbacks' (níl an gaeilge ar sin ar eolas agam, 'féachaint siar' b'fhéidir?). Leis an triail, tá sí saghas ar thriail, fiú go bhfuil sí marbh, ach i ndáiríre, tá gach duine ar thriail. S'éard is an smaoineamh atá ann ná go dtugann an lucht féachana a mbreithiúnas féin faoi cé hiad na daoine atá freagrach as bás Mháire is Pádraigín. Má chuimhním i gceart, déanann an chuid is mó de charaictéirí ag an triail (a máthair srl.) iarracht aon milleán nó ciontacht a chur i bhfad uathu féin. Is éard is an cheist atá ann ná an raibh siad i ndáiríre saor ó aon milleán? Bhí mo mhúinteoir Gaeilge sa séú bhlian i gcónaí á rá nach raibh Máire ciontach ar chor ar bith, toisc go raibh an lucht go léir ar an sochaí, fiú gur mharaigh sí a leanbh féin.

She's dead throughout the play, the trial is happening after the events have already occurred, and we see the rest of the story as sort of 'flashbacks'. The whole trial thing... well she is on trial, in a way, even though she's dead, but really, everyone is on trial. The idea is for the audience to decide who was really responsible for the deaths of Máire and Padraigín. If I remember right, most of the characters (her mother etc.) at the trial try to distance themselves from any blame or guilt, and the question is were they really not to blame at all? My Irish teacher for leaving cert kept saying that Máire was completely innocent, not guilty at all, because it was all society's fault, even though she did definitely murder her own child.

I guess you have to decide for yourself, but I can't say I agreed completely with his very black and white view of things! I hope that was helpful, it's been three years since I read it for Leaving Cert!

Rinne mé é don ardteist, go bhfuil sé an-bhrónach.
Ní dóigh liom go mbeadh siad ceadatha aon rud cosúil leis ar an siollabas Béarla!

I did it for my leaving cert.it is so sad.
i do not think they would allow anything like it on the english syllabus!

Ar léigh tú "Sive" le John B. Keane? Tá an ceann sin ar shiollabas an Teastais Shóisirigh. Tá sé dorcha go leor chomh maith!
