Difference between independed mechanics and garages?

Hey, what are the main differences between independent mechanics and garages? Which are cheaper?
Say if I have bought 1 part which I can't install myself, many garages seem to refuse to do it as they always say "we cannot be sure it's new part, we wont work on it, we wont give you a warranty of servicing etc..." - basically just refuse to work.

Would independent mechanics do it? Do they do what you tell them to do? (car related things :D )

If so, can someone suggest someone good in Dublin area? PM me their details perhaps?

Why buy the part yourself? The mechanic should be able to get it cheaper than you can anyway.

When you say garages, do you mean car dealerships?

Not sure what they are called, placed like Advanced Pitstop - which do car servicing and fixing afaik?

The likes of Advance, as well as main dealers, are unlikely to fit a part you supply yourself as they will say that they cannot stand over it (which is fair enough). If you have a part that needs fitting then youre better off finding a good indy mechanic, who will most likely work out cheaper than a main dealer/Advance and will probably do a better job!

Well, they tend to quote for brand brand new 100% parts which ends up being **** expensive. While say if I want to go ahead with used part? which costs 80% cheaper than what they said, I don't care if it's gonna break next day, I am okay with taking risk - yet they will refuse to do it.
    At least in big services/garages/companies.

**** sake how do you call them: garage? service? mechanic shop?
