If there's a preexisting condition involved then VHI is your only choice.

Is appendix counted as a preexisting condition though? It's not like it's going to flare up again after being removed!

First trip away child no. 2 gets sick when going home.very high temp and purple rash.plane was put into quarinteen until the doctor arrives with an ambulance and she's sent of to temple street.it was scarlet fever and a kidney infection we where lucky that we had arrived home to Ireland.second time we where flying with a large group , son was about 15 he said mani dont feel well,, then fainted he was given oxygen on plane .then when we landed in Paris taken to hospital and ended up having his appendix removed.my 3 day stay was nearly a week .it was a nightmear.i had to use google translate as he has bad allergies and they didn't know what I was saying. So here we go again . Child no 3 has epilepsy so want to make. Sure if anything goes wrong we get the best of care for her a s that we get the help we need. Last company couldn't have cared less.i had no where to stay and as he was 15 I had to stay around.
Is AA the only one that takes people with pre existing conditions ??

    Cathy

Used Insureandgo last year. My wife had just finished chemo/radiation treatment for cancer and my daughter has epilepsy. I got the two existing conditions covered for €70. If I recall they have an online medical screen when you are doing your quote so you don't have to ring them as it is very comprehensive.

If a pre-existing condition is involved, many off-the-shelf insurance policies will not be available to you. You may have to speak to the insurers over the phone, and the price (obviously) may be more expensive if they do decide they can cover you.

I did ring them and they said they would get back to me.The quote at the end was about 15 euro more expenive, which was fine.I rang them back yesterday and Still havent heard.
To be hoenst,I think if they are that difficult to buy from, if I did have a claim, Id be Knackered trying to get it from them.

    Thanks all for the help.

You do realise that you can get VHI travel insurance without having VHI health insurance? You just need to have health cover of some sort. The VHI insurance provides pre-existing cover as standard.

TBH from any experience I have had with travel insurance and based upon the experiences of others, they all seem to be pretty bad when the time comes to actually need their services. As you say, the travel agent was a god send. So if you have kids with pre-existing conditions it might be worth booking via a bonded travel agent rather than independantly as then you will have a rep/contact to help you through things.

Most of the insurance policies from the various companies are underwritten by a small handful of underwriters so the policy you buy with 123.ie could most likley be the same policy as you get via blue or whoever. You will notice that the 'screening line' and 'emergency' contacts are the same for a lot of the various policies regardless of where you buy. So if they were unhelpful in your last claim, you might find them just as bad if you need them again. So get the name of the underwriter not just the provider.

And if you are travelling in europe, get yourself an E111 form in addition to any insurance for additional protection.

E111 forms don't exist anymore, you now need to get a Europeam Health Insurance card instead.

thanks for that - I knew they had changed the name, but the new name for it escaped me.
they are essentially the same thing though, no?

The new card is like a credit card. You must get the forms from your local HSE office. The old E111 were just paper forms as far as I remember. The new cards last a few years too.
