Endodontist recommendation in south Dublin

    Hi all,

I had a root canal done on a molar tooth about six months ago. Unfortunately one of the roots was a bit curved and a piece of file about 5-7 mm long broke off inside it. My dentist wasn't able to remove it, so just filled the tooth with the file left in. Before Christmas I noticed an abscess on the gum near the tooth, and slight pain when pressure is applied to the tooth in question and the tooth adjacent to it.

I've been back to the dentist, who says that I need retreatment of the root canal, that it's going to be very difficult, and that I should go to an endodontist. They're not familiar with any in south Dublin (they're based in another part of the country), so if I could get a recommendation I'd really appreciate it - preferably someone who uses sedation!

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the recommendations - I've made an appointment, and I'm looking forward to getting it sorted out!

Just curious, would it be normal for a dentist to make some sort of contribution to the endodontist's fee in a case like this? I asked about it (politely!) and just got a flat no, which I'm not delighted with. The dentist had told me originally that they'd sort me out if any issues arose. Vague wording, I know.

They are under no obligation to help you with fees, however some refund of the money you paid them would be a nice gesture, after all the treatment they did was a failure. Its going to depend on practice policy.

Or ask for a discount on the crown you will need after the root canal.
If you want to go back to that dentist, that is.

Would the OP be better off with an implant and crown ?

There isnt that much difference in price between an implant and a root canal on a molar performed by an endodontist .

At least with an implant you have some guarantee of a long term solution ,a root canal could fail in a few years and then you are back to square one.
The odds of an implant failing are fairly slim and the implant could always be used as part of a fixture for a bridge if further teeth are lost .

Is a prosthetic limb better than surgery on your own limb?

If the tooth is salvageable and restorable with a good long term prospect then save it.

    Hey guys,

I don't think I'm allowed to name names here but everyone I heard from recommended the same guy, who I went to see this week. Turns out the abscess was on the adjacent tooth (which I would have thought my dentist would notice...) so that's the one I had a root canal on for now, though the tooth with the file in it will still need to be redone at some point.

It went very well and was a much better experience than my previous root canal. Even after the anaesthetic wore off there was no pain at all and almost no tenderness. I was able to eat within a few hours. Last time, I was in pain and unable to eat solids for over a week.

It was much more expensive than my dentist, obviously, but definitely worth the extra money. Thanks for the recommendation!

Is it breaking the rules to say he's in Foxrock? If you Google for an endodontist in Foxrock you'll find contact details. I get a lot of PMs about this!

Would anyone like to comment on the cost of root canal treatments from their endodentist?

rare talking about €600, which seems fairly competitive. Feel free to PM me if you have any feedback good or bad on these guys.

Same as T K .. a piece of the drill used for a root canal (2007) was stuck in my tooth. Now it actually went below the root of my tooth, it's in my gum and I have an abscess with more infection under the tooth. One doctor recommended extraction and implant which scares me so I thought I would also check with an Endodontist. I made an appointment for Monday with somebody from south Dublin. Hopefully I have the right guy. :)

An endodontist should be able to give you a full assessment of your options. If you end up losing the tooth, implant dentistry is not major surgery - just tricky and it needs to be done well.

Please could someone PM the name of (or a pointer to) a recommended endodontist in South Dublin, as I urgently need to make an appointment?

    hi all,

sorry for dragging up an old thread but this seems to be the most recent on this topic.

I had a root canal on a molar tooth 4 years ago - since then, I've had mild infections ("bubbles") appearing beneath the tooth that was treated. Unfortunately over the past week, it has now turned to a abscess full of pus and blood which has spread to my cheek.

My normal dentist has prescribed antibiotics and advised I see an endodontist -but couldn't recommend one personally herself. I'm not concerned whether they are in north or south dublin as Im in the city center.

Could someone PM me a recommended endodontist details please?
