Supplied one of the first ones to land to a driver in November last year. He went in to an entry level 2wd model, coming out of an 09 5 Series (business edition with the leather and Nav).

Didn't get to see the Santa Fe as it's down in Cork, but the driver did mail back a week later to say he's very happy with his new motor.

He needed the extra space the 7 seater gave (more kids arrived since he got the 5 series) and the entry level Santa Fe has enough equipment as standard, along with a low enough retail price, that he was happy to go with that.

Only seen one in the flesh and that was from the passenger seat of a car, driving past the new Hyundai dealer in Drogheda - they had it parked outside. Looks very nice.

Executive 2.2 4WD looks like the pick of the bunch to me. 4 grand plus twice the road tax for Auto feels steep for me. Premium only really offers 19inch wheels and a sunroof it seems

A non premium suv, massive depreciation as standard

We had one on demo for a few days and I've just ordered one.

I'd have one over it's competitors all day long.

Residual value should be quite good too.

I hope they have fixed the flywheel issues that the previous model had

The vast majority of modern diesel engines have flywheel problem.

It's not the engine, it's the inherent design of the flywheel that's the problem.

My parents bought a brand new one 2007 top of the range 4wd auto and sold It in 2010 when it was exactly 3 years old and lost nearly 60 percent on it. the newer one is a lot less to buy so you won't loose as much in deprecation. We had zero problems with ours in the 3 year but there was only 100k km on it when they sold it. I've seen the newer model and they are a lovely car. My mother kind of misses her one but 29mpg on diesel and nearly 1k to tax was just too expensive. Plus it needed aloud of work when we sold it. Op if you like the car I couldn't see any reason not to buy one.

    Should be a good buy

They have obviously cleaned up the engine a fair bit, the tax has come right down.

The power would be nice in the 2.2

I see the basic model is €390 road tax and 48mpg ! Will that sort out the depreciation ?

Looks fab and price is good but not up for loosing my shirt on it !

It looks like a lovely jeep and cheap to run. I still feel theres going to be a shortage of good second hand cars going forward, and being a brand new model will help.

But buying anything new, at that price point, non premium branded is still going to hurt.

But if you like it, and can afford it, go buy it;)

What makes/models would you class as a premium brand that's in direct competition with the Santa Fe and costs roughly the same?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 801 ✭✭✭Wicklowandy

Quite simply, i wouldnt spend that sort of money on anything in its class, but im not the OP, and if thats what he wants good luck to him.

What would you spend it on, or are ye a fanboi?;)

    Fair enough :)

No no im not a fanboi:pac: never owned a Hyundai in my life. It's just my neighbour bought one of these last week and I have to say I was impressed by it. It looks the buisness deffo up there with some of the more premium brands for quality imo. Hyundai seem to have come along way from the cheap cars they once made.

Them and kia too, never thought they would have moved so far so fast (00 kia rio or accent anyone?;))

But while id buy a ceed or an i30 or maybe a few others, i baulk at spending that on a sante fe.

But to be fair, pretend off roaders just arent my thing. A 2wd off roader?

Some lovely seven seaters out there if you need seven seats with no compromise, and some great estates if you dont need 2 extra seats.

And while 4wd might be great for a week every couple of years, most 4wds aren't shod for snow or ice anyway and the skills to use them are lacking in a lot of owners (and thats a common excuse for buying them)

I've never had a problem with a fwd in snow or ice, and i live in a hilly place. It really is how you drive them. Snow chains in the shed, only had to use them once and that was to get to near roundwood in the snow 2 yrs ago.

Best car i ever had in the snow was an old k10 micra years ago, really could get you anywhere (with a bit of effort;))

Hard to beat those old Micras :D

Try stretch to a 4 wheel drive system

Ive seen a few 2wd pretend off roaders stuck and no one with a car wants to pull them out.
Once you drive 4x4 you will know the difference and snow chains is something the other guy needs.
I drive a 4x4 the mpg are usually close enough to 2wd versions that it hardly matters. While both can drive into a water logged field only the 4x4 will
    be driving out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 801 ✭✭✭Wicklowandy

But the vast majority will never see a waterlogged field.

And a 4wd is only as good as its tyres (and driver:D)

I might get a 1 year old next year for 30K ! 5 Years warranty is good ! VW and Audi are now 3 from 2 !

Have the new Santa Fe 2.2 4WD now 6 weeks. Have to say Hyundai have hit the nail on the head with this car as with all of their range. Love the Santa Fe, previously had a Merc ML320 but harder times and all that....
The Santa Fe does all it says on the tin.....except the MPG or L/100.
Trying sooooo hard to get the economy to improve on it but I cannot get it near the listed 46MPG boasted. But hey, this is for all manufacturers not just Hyundai. I am happy to say that I will live with the economy I am getting given the low road tax for a 2.2 ltr engine. My average L/100 is coming is at 7.6L/100.
If this improves I will be back on but for now thumbs up for Hyundai.

37mpg , as in 7mpg better than any 4x4 built before 2010, personally Id be extatic with that in a vehicle of that size.

The mother in law has one of these and I think it's fantastic. Really good looking machine and decent performance. My only quibble - and it's an incredibly minor one - is that, even on the top spec, you can't get the sat nav option. All that's offered here is the small (nasty looking) screen which looks completely lost on the dash. Also, hate the lack of sound with the reverse camera.

Same car as the Kia sorento. 4WD for the price of a 2WD Hyundai?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 801 ✭✭✭Wicklowandy

37 mpg on a tight engine is amazing for a machine that size, and it'll get better with time:)

Keith, they advertise 47mpg I think, have you gone back to them? Are you mainly doing urban driving ?

youll probably find theres an * after that , id imagine thats the economy with only 1 person and no cargo onboard, on a calm day, straight motorway at 90km/h , with active eco mode turned on.

And it'll have 20000km up before you can judge economy fairly. 37 mpg is still impressive.

I agree that it is a lovely car and well worth a look. My only quibble is the lack of options as mentioned above. Cant spec Sat Nav or any options for that matter. The manual is only sold in executive trim. They have a premium trim that includes nav and a sunroof which is only available in automatic. I checked in the UK and they have a much wider offering.... They have pushed the price up a good bit and given this they would be well served allowing a wider range of options.
