Lads, I am looking at buying a 2nd hand jeep not looking at spending much, as i have a company car and just want something for the weekends, I do a lot of fishing so dont want to wreck the car.
I always wanted a jeep so i've decided now is the time, I was looking at Pajero sports around 99-02, How reliable are they?
Fuel isnt an issue for me as i will be doing very low mileage!
I was also considering Landrover Disco.
any advice greatly appreciated...only looking to spend about 1500 maybe a bit more!

Can't comment on the Pajero sport but 1500 will get you a ratty late Disco 1 or early Disco 2. Disco 1 would be better as a weekender if you can find one without a rotten rear floor and is a bit simpler to maintain. Unless you can get commercial motor tax it will cost €1080 a year to tax.

For €1500 price region, you are going to be back around the 96 or 1997 mark. I bought a LWB 97 trooper for 1400 in wicklow just before Christmas. Happy with it, had a T belt fitted and a good service, so fingers crossed! It was replacing a 97 trooper which broke its Timing belt. BUT when I got the insurance renewal on Friday (FBD) it looked highish at €440. I queried this price, and was told that this was due to the jeep being over 15 years of age. An 02 or 03 jeep would be at least €120 less. The local insurance broker could only find 3 companies to quote for the business, FBD ont one of them. Thats for 3rd party only insurance, btw. So by the time you pay tax and insurance, its half the price of the jeep!

I'm sure you have your reasons but my experience is that anything less than fully comp isn't worth the bits it's stored in.

Thanks lads, Most i would go is 2K..as its going to be used so little it wouldn't make sense to spend anymore!! I am going to look at a Terrano 98 anyone any experince of these? Hi Stonewolf, perhaps I'm missing something, but if my jeep is stolen, or burns, I have lost only the value of "the bits its stored in" with 3rd party only insurance.
If I am cause an accident, and a 3rd party is injured, their vehicle damaged etc, or someone killed, then 3rd party is worth a hell of a lot to me, potentially millions.
All insurance is a trade off between cost, and possible benefit.
    Cheers,
    Iver.
Anyway, will have a go at bargaining FBD down tomorrow!

PS Dave dth, you were very probably warned off about the 3.0 litre troopers, from 98 onwards. They can be picked up very cheaply indeed, as a scan of donedeal will show. I looked at one 3 years ago, and rang a neighbour who worked in a commercial garage, (and Isuzu dealer) to ask his opinion. He replied "If you buy it never ring me again!"Iver

When an uninsured guy rams you and then either hares off like a bat out of hell without exchanging details or vanishes back off home rather than face the bill you'll know what I mean. With FC you take the hit on your NCB but actually have a comeback, with anything less you're screwed until the MIBI get around to your case (took 18 months for me).

Plenty of LWB Pajero's around for that budget so you should have no problem choosing a decent one. They're priced at hundreds less than the SWB versions and are pretty capable off-road too even in standard guise.

Edit to add, they're also selectable 4wd and can be safely be driven on tarmac in 4H without any risk to the transmission. Could be handy in flooding or snow conditions.
