    Hi all,

i have a felt qx 80 like the one shown in the pic. changed a tube on the back wheel recently and ever since the gears have been slipping/jumping, and always when i'm changing from high to low going uphill. it was the first time i changed a tube on a bike on about 25 years, and i must have done something wrong to cause the gears to jump all the time. any tips?

Thanks. Pic is a bit too large isn't it!

Have a look on YouTube for adjusting your 'derailleur alignment, it's fairly easy to fix if I think that's what happening with your gears

probably just cable tension, add a bit of tension by turning the cable adjuster counter clockwise (either on the shifter or derailleur) 1/4 turns and see if it helps

Wait, first thing's first, what state is your chain and cassette? How long have you had hem? How many KM have you put into them?

Does it ever switch up and down when riding on the flats pedaling easily?

First thing I'd check is whether the wheel is properly in the drop-outs. With the bike sitting on its wheels release the QR or axle nut and make sure the wheel is properly home. Tighten and re-check. I often find that when I put a wheel back on when the bike is in the work stand it doesn't seat properly!

yeah as CaoimH_in said if youve been using the same chain for a long time you might need to replace the chain cassette and chainrings due to wear and tear

i have the bike since october last year, probably less than 200km on it so far. it changes up and down easily on the flat and going uphill, but jumps and gives a clicking sound after changing gear.

i'll have to have a fiddle with it tomorrow and see how i get on. thanks for all the suggestions.

C3po might be right , check that your wheel is fully home on both sides

.....as well as checking that the wheel is seated properly it's possible that the cable needs to be adjusted as they tend to stretch and require realignment in a new bike after the first few hundred kms.

Fiddle around with the barrel tension adjusters before you go near the rear derailleur would be my advice (assuming the wheel is seated correctly and running parallel with the seat tube). Sometimes the cable just gets loose. It's a very simple job. You want to make sure there is loose enough tension in the wires that all the gears can be used, while tight enough tension that the clicking sound/switching is removed. It's common too that the barrel adjusters when they aren't used much become stuck, rusted, etc. so bring GT85 or WD40.

Should be able to get it sorted yourself.
