I'm guessing you have a 128GB SSD installed? If so go with that drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭John Kelly of

just rang microsoft and some indian guy told me to go with drive 1.
    ffs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,387 ✭✭✭glynf

No idea why they said to use the 1Tb, that, if you have an SSD I would strongly suggest that. No point putting your OS on the slower drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭John Kelly of

this guy was talking me through it so i did what he said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭John Kelly of

Ok this is not funny anymore.
My screen is gone dead. The Indian guy is clueless and is asking me the make and model of the monitor so I hung up on him.
I took out the disk and started it again. the windows logo comes up and then it goes dead again.
Would really appreciate if anyone here can help as I have no idea what is going on?

You would not be the first to hang up on them :)

First off, I would open the PC and disconnect the 1Tb HDD. Then restart and hit Delete or F2 (depends on your motherboard) to enter the BIOS. When in your BIOS, make sure the DVD drive is the first device in the boot order, usually hitting F1 brings up the help menu if you are stuck, otherwise the manual will explain how. Then save and exit the BIOS. Next put the Windows 8 disc in the DVD drive and reboot. Go through the setup section enter your serial no. etc. and let the installer do its thing.

When its done, restart and go into the BIOS and set the SSD as your first boot device, again save and exit. Then install the motherboard, GPU/sound card drivers etc.

All you have to do now is reconnect the 1TB, and format it and you are done.

Ok thanks. This is a lot more than I bargained for and if I could wind the clock back I would have just bought a pc in a shop.
Isn't the windows 8 already installed on the 1tb hard drive like that indian guy told me? will it be on both drives when I reconnect it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,387 ✭✭✭glynf

Don't worry, its not as daunting as it sounds and there are some great windows install guides on line as well.

Yes the 1Tb has also got windows on it but once you set the boot order of the BIOS to the SSD first-before the HDD, you wont have an issue as it should boot from the SSD first. make sure you go to Disk Management in Windows 8 and format the 1TB straight away though.

    thanks again for you help
will I be able to delete the windows from the itb hard drive then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭John Kelly of

Ok I disconnected 1 tb hard drive, started pressed f2 clicked on boot and selected dvd as option 1
    then saved change
then restarted with disk and it asked me for product key etc. then reinstalled and it went up to 100% then said installing devices and then went dead again.
same situation as b4 screen dead.
    fed up with this

No probs and yes you will, once you are in Disk mangement give a look at this guide.

Once you see your 1Tb, right-click on the drive and choose format.,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,387 ✭✭✭glynf

Ok, when you say it went dead do you mean the PC shuts down, no fans running etc? Or is it a blank screen with the PC still running?

Do you have a graphics card installed? Is your monitor connected to the VGA/DVI/HDMI on the motherboard or the graphics card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91 ✭✭Yakuza42

Maybe try switching from the graphics card display port to the motherboard display port if you have one. For some reason my graphics card output didn't work once I installed W8, the same problem you are having. When I switched over the display it worked and then I downloaded all my drivers again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭John Kelly of

started it again and got message saying
    recovery
your pc couldn't start properly and needs to be repaired
    error code 0xc0000001
youll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you dont have any installtion media like a disc or usb device contact your system admin or pc manufacturer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭John Kelly of

started again and screen went dead again. fans are running in pc though.
yes the monitor is connected to graphics card

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭John Kelly of

I switched monitor to motherboard and restarted but there is nothing coming up on the screen at all now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭John Kelly of

Ok switched monitor back to graphics card. restarted and pressed f2
I have a screen in front of me
    ASROCK UEFI SETUP UTILITY
    I click on Boot
Boot option 1 is set to
    AHCI P3: M4-CT128M4SSD2
    Is this correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,387 ✭✭✭glynf

Have you tried to repair with the OS disc in the DVD drive?

The disc you are using, is it a boxed retail/OEM copy or did you download the windows 8 files and burn an ISO to DVD?

Might be worth wiping the SSD, resetting the BIOS to defaults and trying a fresh install to see if that solves it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭John Kelly of

I bought it this morning in a box in pc world windows pro.

If i put it in the dvd drive wouldnt I have to reset the boot to dvd again?

how do I wipe the ssd? how do I set the bios to defaults?

Open up the case and unplug the larger mechanical drive (obviously unplug computer from power first). Then turn it on. If you arn't getting a display pop the battery out from the motherboard and leave it out for 3 minutes. Put it back in again, does it post? If it does brilliant, now boot off the Win 8 disc again and install it on the 119gb ssd.
Once installed then shut down the computer, plug the other drive back in, then turn on the computer. Windows should boot off your SSD first and then format the drive D: or whatever the other drive shows up as under Computer.

thanks but I think I already unplugged the 1tb drive and installed the windows on the ssd but it did the same thing that time as well.
At the moment the 1 tb hard drive is disconnected.
does anyone know of someone who can come to your house and fix this type of thing? I can't waste anymore time at this and am willing to pay someone to sort it out. I am in Rathfarnham

Did the restart again booting from cd
It installed to 100% then said windows needs to restart
    then said getting devices ready
then got to 60% I think and then screen went dead again.
    same as b4

Go into the bios, look for integrated video and disable it (assuming you have a dedicated video card). Then try re-installing Windows. Also if you can, try another monitor, video lead if you can. Are you using HDMI? If you are try VGA

    John,

When you say its crashing 'getting devices ready', It sounds like Windows is hanging on some 3rd party driver install, possibly the graphics card. TBH I would always download the latest m.board/chipset sound & GPU drivers from the manufacturers website(s) and install them myself-would not trust windows tbh.

I don't know what graphic card you have but you might try removing the graphic card and then try to complete windows installation, if this sorts it then re-fit the graphics card and restart.
When windows prompts about searching and installing your new hardware, cancel it then download and install the proper Nvidia or AMD drivers yourself.

    thanks man
I opened it up and took out the graphics card then rebooted from dvd and it seems to have installed properly now. The graphics card is a:
Club 3D Radeon HD 7959 Royal King 3GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7950 PCI Express
I will now turn off again, refit graphics card, restart and I will be given a prompt to install graphics card etc.

Ok refitted graphics card and restarted pc
    ....screen blank
took the hdmi cable out of hdmi port and using dvi adapter put it back in graphics card
screen is flickering alternating between bright red fuzzyness and black and gray and gray with a green line across the middle
    thats it

Sounds like a dead graphics card.

I recommended that graphics card based on price and a good review but since then I have seen about 3 people on this board posting about that card arriving dead :(

No worries tuxy but what are the implications of using the system without the card? What would I not be able to do?

The card would be better for gaming, although it's worth returning it as it is an extra component that you paid for...

yes it did cost 284.54 that and the german windows at another 86,09 he he.
anyways will I still be able to play games etc. without it? is there a big difference?.

You would be running with the integrated intel graphic which is very poor for gaming.
System would do everything else just fine but gaming would be poor.

You need to contact hardwareversand and get a RMA for the card.
They will send you a new one.

Try to get a refund on windows 8 also.

    just wondering
a cd came with the kit for the graphics card titled
    Club driver CD
Am I supposed to use that in some way? have I missed something?

Not really. The cd is for people that do not have access to the internet.
It has the drive for the card. It's best to download latest amd ati radeon driver from the internet rather than use the one on the cd.

The card should work in windows with no driver installed with very basic functions.
If you can't get into windows at all with the gpu installed the card is faulty and you need to return it.

I looked on their ATI website and they only have driver downloads for window 7 there is no windows 8 on list
could that be the problem? the graphics card isn't compatible with windows 8?

There is a windows 8 driver
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

select desktop graphics, radeon hd, 7xxx

It's defiantly not a driver issue. If the pc will not boot and you are sure the card is connected correctly it is a hardware issue.

No probs. I know how frustrating it is. You just have to go through the RMA process.

Take some photos of the inside, to make sure that everything hooked up correctly?

There's not really much that could be wrong there. The board only fits in the slot the correct way and the power pins only fit the right way round.

I think its hooked up properly because at the start when I had the screen plugged into the card it got most of the way through the install of windows 8 before crashing if it wasnt hooked up right i suppose i would never have got anything on the screen at any stage.

anyways at least the pc is working now and hopefully i will get that card replaced by the germans thanks again everyone

Sounds like a dodgy card all right, Hardwareversand are supposedly good to deal with RMA wise. Mind me asking what happened with the Win 8 copy you bought from them? Reason I ask is I plan on buying a copy from them..

It was a German copy and Microsoft don't release the ISOs for Windows 8 so you can't download the English version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,387 ✭✭✭glynf

Ah Ok, planned on the English OEM version anyway. Maybe a stupid question, but would it not be possible to install in German & then just select English?

It should be possible watch this video while installing it in German

Then install english in control panel.
