    Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is a defined walking path up to the top of Kippure or is it fenced off because of the radio equipment up there?

There's a full tarmac access road. Barrier across to stop vehicles, but you can walk or wheel a bike around it.

Just watch the weather, often shrouded in low cloud and very likely to be icy with the weather the way it is in winter.

    Stunning views sure enough!

Yes, there was a cyclist last year who skidded off the road on the way down and hurt himself quite seriously ...

    Thanks all,

Went up yesterday but didn't climb it as the snow was coming down quite heavily - still it was lovely up there in that weather. Went to Lough Dan instead as it's not so exposed.

That's a lovely part as well :) Glad you enjoyed it. So lucky to have the mountains 20 mins away by car.

Stay well clear of the compound if it is icy or the thaw after a cold spell, motorbike sized chunks of ice have a tendency to come tumbling down from the antenna and can land quite a distance from the mast, that is why the buildings/cabins in high sites are build like bunkers with reinforced roofs!

Very true. Not only from the mast itself, but also from the steel guy ropes. Here's a photo I found that demonstrates how bad it can get ...
