Sets and reps: how many is best?

Just wondering what the best way of working out is. I have an athletic build and want to develop athletic muscle, with a good shape. Kinda like a sprinter

I read that the following is best for building dense muscle.

5 sets of 6 reps with heavy weights.

How does this compare to why I usually do, which is 3 sets of 10 reps with moderately heavy weights? Usually with 30 seconds rest in between. A minute if I can't reach 10 reps on the last set.

I heard that you should aim for about 30 reps of each exercise overall (e.g 3 sets of 10 reps, or alternatively 6 reps of 5 sets).

So basically are short reps with heavier weights (with more sets) better considering I'm not looking to bulk up too much?
