Gorilla Glass - Do You Still Need a Screen Protector

Hi, for my first time using a phone with Gorilla glass, specifically Gorilla Glass 2, does that make a phone immune to all those faint scratches you get just from general usage not from dropping it or anything? Or is it still adviseable to apply a protector?

Haven't bothered with a screen protector in the last 4 years. No scratches on any of the phones owned in that period. My galaxy 2 does have some nicks on the bezel (slightly raised above the screen, good design to protect it) from dropping it but no marks on screen itself. Phone goes into random pockets with random items like keys etc all the time.

Gorilla glass is just a marketing term, all phones (bar the very first touchscreen ones) have had hardened/scratch-resistant glass for a long time now.

Depends on how careful you are. I had a htc desire and a GS2 for the last 3 years, both had zero protection. Never had a scratch on either and used to put them in a jeans pocket with change or keys. I hate the look of screen protectors and would never bother with one.

Interesting, never knew that, ive been applying screen protectors for years and replacing them every few weeks because they get scratched up and nasty so easily!

I have always scratched my screens, from the iPhone 1 to the SG3 no matter how careful I am

the glass has got more resilient through out the years but it most definitely scratchable

I have resigned myself to using a screen protector

Only scratch I got was my GS2 when a child decided rub it screen side down across a laminate floor with grit on it!

Ive had the Galaxy S, GS2 and now the GS3
All phones treated the same. I keep it in my pocket at work and when I'm out and about.

I never had a scratch on the original Galaxy S. That had Gorilla glass. I had that phone for 18 months.

The GS2 has a good few minor scratches and was only used for about a third of the time I had the Galaxy S

The GS3 is 6 weeks old and already has scratches.

Both the GS2 and GS3 have gorilla glass 2.

So in my experience Gorilla glass 2 is no where near as durable or scratch resistant as gorilla glass.

At the end of the day though I don't really care if there are minor scratches on the phone. If someone does care about marks on the phone then they definitely need a screen protector with Gorilla Glass 2.

Yes! Every gorilla glass phone I had ended up having a tiny scratch somewhere.

Id try to be as careful as possible, I don't leave keys and coins in the same pockets as the phone, yet you still end up getting one S:

I have a Zagg HD on my phone, pretty happy with it, any scratches that do come on it, heal itself out

Hate the sight of them. They make a phone look worse than any scratch.

Properly applied they're invisible, nothing worse than when someone just slaps one on and every speck forms a horrible bubble though, I always give the screen a good polish with Brasso Gadget Care then use a headlamp and needle to pick out any specks that remain while I lower it on slowly, you wouldn't know there's one on the screen afterwards.

Sounds like I'll carry on doing it aswell, can't stand a scratched screen.

Have gorilla glass and used phone for 15 months now with no problem. Dropped it a few times and there are a few scratches on the case but the screen is perfect.

The other way here, would rather have a piece of plastic on it, than having to look at a scratch.. Old Zaggs sort of had a grainy effect. Also used to colour in after a while. HD ones are clearer and smoother.

Plus mine is applied perfect :-)

Using a shatter sheet on my XS, factory applied, barely scratched that. And i've dropped it three times!

    Phone, left front pocket.
Wallet + cash, right front pocket
    Keys, back left pocket
    Other, back right.

Get into a habit like this and you'll be dandy.

I used to hate screen protectors but these ones are fantastic, no bubbles, simple to apply and once they get any sort of dust under them or around the home button just take off, wpe, reapply:

    Couldnt recommend them enough

I have a Nokia N9 - Gorilla Glass. Phone was fine for a year, then one day it has a fairly nasty scratch right in the centre of the screen. No idea how it got there - the phone's never in a pocket with keys or anything; never dropped, either...

But I rather live with a scratch or 10 than apply one of those ill-fitting, tacky screen protectors. Only good ones are Spigen's
protectors - the ones made from glass and with oleophobic coating. But they are only available for iPhones so far.

Think I might get one for the note 2. Is it case compatible?

Always used screen protectors on my ipod touch and ipad.
I've had the GS3 for 7months or so now and haven't applied a screen protector. Usually carry it around in my wallet pocket (i keep my wallet on one side and my coins/keys on the other - is this standard pocket practice?) and haven't had any problems with scratches.

glass (gorilla or otherwise) can only be scratched by something which is harder than it. Keys coins etc are made from metal, which is softer than glass so those items do not scratch your phones screen. What will will be mineral items like bits of sand etc in your pocket, grains of quartz and other pocket detritus can do huge damage to your screen, and you will happily blame your keys, or buttons.

If you have a deep scratch on your screen then it was most likely caused by a tiny piece of dirt rather than your metal keys.

a screen protector or case is always wise just to keep those evil flex from scratching your glass screen. or hoover your pockets out regular ;-)

This is on the ball. My old phone was in my pocket with all sorts of crap and was dropped once or twice and no scratches. I was using it one day and noticed two specks of dirt. I wiped the screen and two big dirty scratches followed them.

I'm still using my trusty Nokia E72 with a Zagg protector. I've always wondered what affect a screen protector has on the use of a touch screen. Surely it takes away from the sensation of touching/swiping the touchscreen?

I'd be interested in a Lumia 820 with a Zagg protector.

You sit on your keys ?
Does that not hurt your arse ?

Regarding how to remove dust/dirt specks which cause bubbles when applying screen protectors:

I peel back the screen protector, and use a piece of that opaque, non-yellowing Sellotape gift wrap tape to remove the dust/dirt. Regular sellotape might work too - it's just that the other one is not so 'permanent' and is easy to peel off.

Repeat until all specks/bubbles are gone.

Result: Perfectly applied protector, with absolutely no bubbles!

My phone (a Jiayu G2S) arrived with a protector but I took it off after a few days as it was ugly. I have a pocket I use only for the phone and a glass cleaning cloth. Not even the slightest blemish weeks later.
Am I the only person who points the screen inwards in my pocket too "just in case"?

this might sound a bit anol.... I keep my right pocket for phone only with the screen facing towards leg.

    you know it safe then.....

Me too - facing inwards alone in my left trouser pocket. All the shrapnel goes into my right pocket.

I use Invisible Shield, brilliant protection and really easy to put on, used it now on a few phones and ways come out perfect.
