Outside Christmas lights

Just before the end of Xmas, my outside lights gave trouble. I had two sets, one nearer the indoor socket which fed them and one further away. Both were on the one cable which has extension sockets and plugs which are part of the lights. The set of lights nearest the indoor socket failed but the other set kept lighting. I have inspected the sockets etc and even checked each bulb by switching in a new one but no luck. Any ideas of what the solution might be?
