Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me . My father in law past away and my mother in law was saying that he worked in uk in 70s for 8 years paying tax and paying a pension . Is there anyway that this could be claimed back ?? The pension what happens to that ? And how would I go about enquiring ? Any help would be appreciated as I haven't a clue and said I would look into it . Thanks

It could help your mother in law qualify for a widows contributory pension. There are treaties between EU countries about the transfer of pension contributions.

http://ec.europa.eu/ireland/the_eu_and_you/faq/pensions/index_en.htm That's for eu-wide stuff, Ireland and UK have their own agreement on top of that I think. In addition, public vs private pensions are treated differently.

Go talk to HMRC (the uk taxman): www.hmrc.gov.uk

It it was a private pension then your MiL would have some hope of getting it, but I think if it was a state pension, I am not sure if that can be claimed back now that your FiL has past away.
