Basic Setup Question

When I say "basic"...I mean basic !!!. First of all...not 100% sure this is the right forum. Secondly...I have trawlled earlier posts to see if my query might have been covered before but no obvious matches.

Anyway..I have a couple of Dreambox 500c boxes...plus some old Sky digiboxes (I had a Sky subscription in UK). With the addition of a satellite dish...is it possible to cheaply extract some value from these boxes ?. I'm just looking at options for bedrooms...and a cheaper alternative to multiroom. I'm in Dublin...and have UPC in the main room.

If I can't put these to use...they're scheduled for dumping.

Any help...or steer...would be appreciated. I can do the research if pointed !.

you could also try posting in the satellite forum.

the dreambox 500c boxes aren't much use as the tuner is for cable, ie upc frequencies. maybe stick them on ebay. i looked into changing the tuner in a dm 500 to a sat tuner but it wasn't worth it as the tuner was about 40 euro and a clone box is 60. there is a way you can use them for upc but its not allowed be discussed on here.

as for the sky boxes you can just hook them up to your sat dish with a quad lnb and get all the free to air channels that are on 28e where sky broadcast from. you will get about 50 odd channels that are watchable and about 200 rubbish ones. all bbc, itv, ch4, ch5 and news and film 4 are available with this setup. you wont be able to record if they are sky plus boxes but they are perfect for watching. you can save up to 50 channels you want to watch in favorites on the epg so you dont have to look through all the channels you dont have.
