Golf MKIV Headlight Bulbs

Noticed the left main (high) beam light wasnt working on my Golf MKIV 2002 1.4P, swopped the bulb for another 448 bulb and it's still not working. I've checked the fuse and it seems fine... I want to check the voltage going to the wires but I cant find anywhere online that will tell me conclusively about the contacts.. Manual is useless as well..

I'm assuming the purple/black wire is the positive and the brown is the neutral?

    H1.

The purple/black wire is the positive. Use a ground off the battery to test voltage

    Are your fuses intact?

Great thanks for your quick response.. I checked fuses 18 thru 21 (the two bulbs on both sides) and they are all fine... I'll check the wire now..

No voltage going to the purple wire... I was doing a lot of work with the battery recently, taking it in and out... I wonder did I dislodge something... I'll follow back the purple/black wire and see if I get 12v anyway near the chassis.

When measuring voltage to a bulb it doesn't matter which is positive or negative. The multimeter will just display a negative value if you put them the wrong way around.
