parcel "left with neighbour" but they don't have it.

I ordered something off ebay, and this afternoon I got home to find a delivery slip had been left by UK Mail, saying that while I'd been out they'd left it with my neighbour at number 125. So I went to number 125 with this slip, but my neighbour says they've never had any package for me, and they were out at the time it was delivered. I do believe my neighbour. I've lived next door to them for 13 years and used to babysit their kids. They are devout Jehovah's witnesses, they wouldn't steal from me. Also the thing I ordered was a 5 litre bottle of linseed oil. Who on earth would want to steal that?

So my question is - what can happen about this? I've emailed the ebay seller and am awaiting a response. What happens in a situation like this?

IIRC, only the sender can issue proceeding against whoever sent the package, not the receiver.

    Who are UK Mail?

I'd try other neighbours in case the wrong number was put on the slip.

The seller has an obligation to supply to you, so goods misdelivered remain his problem to solve.

But I mean, the neighbour says they never took the package. UK Mail says they did. How is this investigated? Will the police investigate my neighbour or what? How do they decide who's telling the truth?

    Courier in the UK.

OP have you checked a few other neighbours just in case the driver got the wrong number. If it doesn't show up ring the depot. After that email the seller. Could well be a genuine mistake by the courier.

UK Mail are a delivery company that alot of internet sellers are using now. I've already asked the neighbours on the other side just in case but they said no.

Situation has just gotten weirder. I phoned UK Mail and they checked with the driver. Apparently when numer 125 answered the door, she said, "Oh, I'll take that, it's for my daughter who lives at number 127." WTF? I am not related to the people at 125! And they weren't even there and didn't take the delivery anyway!

Strange things can happen. I've had no less than two packages delived to a neighbour on different days - both left behind the house in the rain.
Ask the neighbour again if you can have a look around the back of their house. I'm afraid being a Jehova's Witness is not a guarantee of honesty.

Just to clarify, you are in the UK and UK Mail are a courier?

Ask the seller for the tracking information to see what was stated by the courier. If it says delivered, inform the seller that it was not and ask the seller to report non-delivery to the courier. Unfortunately Paypal and ebay will probably see delivered and refuse any claim. You therefore need to get that 'delivered' status changed and the seller is only one that can.

It's ok, it's sorted now. Turns out the courier left it at my grandmother's flat next to my house which doesn't have a number, and assumed that that flat was number 125.

Might want to put a number on the door (127a?) as your Grandmother could have done a runner with 5L of oil and you would be none the wiser!

The couriers are taking chances though , and in some cases , they just ask your name and then sign themselves .
They will then put down the name of the addressee as well.

True, if we were talking about a shiny new ipod or a diamond ring or some such. But 5 litres of linseed oil? I think you can be fairly sure nobody is trying to rob that:D

My Royal Mail postman always signs himself. I come home and find packages left on my doorstep that he should have got me to sign for, and he just leaves a note saying, "I've signed for it myself." Makes me wonder what would happen if someone nicked those packages.

They'd hang him out to dry. Sad, beause he's being helpful but if anything goes wrong he gets it in the neck. Modern blame culture.
