Random Car Ad Question

I posted this in the After Hours forum because it's a bit random and they like that sort of stuff...but it occurred to me that some of you lot might know the answer:

I'm writing a speech about the psychology behind the new Renault ads that are on the radio and tv...essentially the "learn to live again" ads - you may have heard of them. As an example of an ad that doesn't do so well in selling its product there is a car being advertised which doesn't seem to appear in the ad at all and at the end you only know it's a car ad because they flash up the symbol of the car...so my question is...what car ad is that?

    Thanks in advance!

p.s. google and youtube searches are proving fruitless...

How do they flash up the car symbol on the radio?

    This the advert:

    Its "Afford to live again".

The black car towards the end is the Fluence but I think the ad is aimed at the entire Renault range rather than one particular model.

It reminds me of a recent Samsung Galaxy S3 advert, where they only showed the phone for a few seconds, while the iPhone was show for about 55 of 60 seconds. Can't find a link right now, but lots of advertisers have to take a different approach. Guinness adverts are always very good, but you can't stare a at pint for 30 seconds solid.

I can, but only as long as I can drink it when its settled

I think these ads are meant to keep the watcher's interest. I suppose the first time you see this ad you just pay full attention to it till you know what this is about.

Shows up late and doesn't last long... Is it Fiat?

There's product marketing and there's brand marketing - I believe the Renault ad posted is the latter.

So the Renault ad is effective because you can relate to each scenario and they properly show the car and info on it at the end...there's an ad campaign out there which is completely abstract...country scenes and things and no idea of a car...you see it's so abstract that I can't remember it! All I remember is saying to my boyfriend, well that was a really stupid advert and then immediately forgetting what brand of car it was which isn't what ad campaigners are going for!

(thank you for your replies...I'll look up the fiat ad now)

It's effective because it's memorable (for me anyway), and it's memorable because it's both funny and original. Renault are trying to get people with savings (who are worried about spending them) to splash some cash on a new, cheap-ish car.

The "Oh Daddy" line by the end is memorable IMHO

They seem to like leaving the car until the end, the recent megane ads with Carl Lewis, Steffi Graf etc are like that too.

Unfortunately I think you've missed my point. The ad I'm on about doesn't have any car in it...you only know it was a car ad because of the symbol at the end flashing up...it's perfectly fine to have some suspense in the ad and then reveal the car at the end like the one you quoted...but there is definitely an ad that I saw that left us wondering why they had made it. Just wish I could remember it but I suppose that's my point, I can't!

    Thanks for replying though...

I think you've answered your own question.

Basically because people wonder why there's hardly a mention of a car in the ad and then go on the Internet and ask others about it.

A senseless Ad can end up being remembered more than an Ad that made perfect sense.

Probably a Honda Ad....or maybe VW. Although it could be Toyota...
Definitely not Saab or Rover though.
