HP Pavilion g6 - Internet issues

I bought this laptop last week brand new and, although the specs looked great for what I need it is having an awful time with the internet. I'm barely picking up 1mb most of the time via Wifi but other devices in my room / elsewhere in the apartment are picking up closer to 20 mb. I've turned off the Norton firewall that was automatically set up but no real difference.

Here's a sample speedtest from the laptop:

Does anyone have any experiences like this/advice?

The laptop runs on Windows 8 by the way, in case that makes a difference. I owe anyone who can help a beer!

Go to the HP website and make sure you have the latest driver for the wireless.

Hook it up by Ethernet and then either try the Speedtest again or download an iso from HEAnet.

I assumed it was a problem with the laptop so had it exchanged, but the new machine is the same. Picking up 1/10th of what I should be with it. Have you had any luck improving things?

click on the picture of the battery if it is on energy star click more power options then change plan settings then change advanced power settings then click on wireless adapter settings then power saver mode and set both to max performance that should sort it for you :)

This fix has been suggested numerous times in the forum; it should be a staple troubleshoot for any laptop.
