The course I did before was a mixture of psychology/ sociology/ social science.

I found it interesting and enjoyed studying, it was a very general course so I don't have huge knowledge of psychology, what I am wondering is why do so many people want to be come psychologist and psychotherapist what do people get out of it as career.

Same thing people get out of any career. It's interesting, stimulating, rewarding, satisfying...

Why not ask doctors why they want to be doctors?

Maybe they genuinely want to help people, maybe they want to carry out research to further knowledge in a particular area, maybe they want the financial rewards that some senior posts in the discipline offer... Why does anybody want to be anything? I imagine every career path has its own merits.
