I've been a couple of times and IMO it's not a patch on the the Angling Expo at the event centre near the airport (http://maramedia.ie/public-exhibitions/ireland-angling-expo1). It's pretty small with only a handful of stands. They do have a couple of outdoor demos on the small lakes there that can be useful but there are far more stands and demos at the Expo.

What types of fishing are covered in this expo? Will there be stands and experts for course fishing, for example.

Yeah it's pretty good. A lot of the trade stands are major UK fishing retailers that come over to peddle their wares. BUt you also have all the Irish water related organisations, fishing travel abroad, a small theatre area for seminars, they usually have a few demo areas as well. There are always a few fishing celebs too, John Wilson and Matt Hayes are just 2 of those I've seen in recent years.

The angling expo is pretty good if you know what you are looking for. There has been a great coarse stand at the top left when you enter. They usually have decent deals on hooks and terminal tackle.

Was looking more at the 2 shows this year and i have to say guys i'm very much leaning towards the Hooked Live show especially when I heard that the expo in swords supports commercial fishing. I'd prefer to spend my money with people that don't support commercial fishing.
Also my nephew has asked me to teach him how to fish and Hooked is actually running a program Called "learn to fish" Heres the link, http://www.hooked.ie/1/post/2013/01/learn-to-fish-at-hookedie.html (makes my job easier :D:D ) itll keep him off my back :)

Can I ask you Beardyman why would you like to support the UK fishing retailers???? (Support Irish, Our economic situation!!!!!!) Hooked seems to have far more Irish retailers and also the big UK dealers as well......

My son (14) is mad into fishing. We are just back from Thailand where he did loads and caught huge fish. Would it be worth taking him to this?

The English companies come over here with their surplus stock, hardto shift, out of date,( in their eyes) call it what you will, but it's a great chance to turn it back into money,
kinda like Woodbury common in the US.
(Also full of Irish, well use to be, )
These outlets are full of last seasons, now out off date items, at knock down prices.
If you want to pick up some great items in terms of luggage, accessories, and bulk buys such as lures, lines braid etc, at knock down prices, then swords is the
place to shop, whether or not the trader is local or from the uk is for most, not an issue.

Have been to both the Hooked show, last 2 years & the Angling show, last 4 years, and this year if we are going, it will only be to the Swords show (current economic climate and all that).

From what I remember of the Hooked shows, the majority of the few retailers there were also at Swords and I believe that one of the biggest at Hooked was a UK seller called Ultimate, who I got a good flyrod off a few years ago for my son, when they were selling at the Swords show. I believe both venues, had a good mix of UK and Irish sellers, North & South.

Did I just get castigated for stating that UK retailers attended the show??? Okay so they are the facts, maybe I should have put more weight on all the Irish stands that are present. I've attended Hooked the past 2 years and have been sorely disappointed. In my opinion (didn't I say that In my initial message?) the Angling Expo is FAR superior. Hooked has a handful of stands from both Irish and UK organisations and is a grand way to kill a couple of hours. While the Angling Expo has dozens of stands including all of the major Irish fishing retailers and organisations, many fishing-tourism based businesses (Irish primarily), water safety bodies, various regional fishing organisations, demonstrations, fishing celebrities, youth groups such as Dublin Angling Initiative and various fishing clubs in addition to the UK retailers also present.

Again, this is all my experience and opinion only. If I had to pick one show above the other, I'd definitely be heading for the event centre.

How does the show in Swords support commercial fishing?

I went in looking for a couple of fly rods priced to sell!
Needless to say I left very disappointed. I did some research on the net before hand so I knew that any rod there worth buying was way cheaper online. Although there was some fly tying stalls there from N.I and Britain which were competitively priced.

Folks. Has anyone booked tickets for the angling show this weekend with Mara Media? I ordered mine last week and they still havent arrived. Called their office and was given a mobile and now Im just getting a voice mail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 errigal2012

    Hi,

When you book the ticket online you should print off the confirmation reference number which acts as a receipt/ticket and produce this at the door. If this was not done then Mara Media will have a list of those who purchased tickets for the show online and simply your name at the ticket box and we will tick your name off the list we printed of online bookings.
    Enjoy the show.

I went this morning looking for a good quality genetic cock cape, i shouldn't have bothered. Not a huge amount there. Cookshill have a half decent fly tying stand, the rest are not great. Prices are inflated shop prices. From a flytying material point of view its not really worth it, and had to pay in for the privilege.

If you are looking for fly tying materials contact pat Nolan in premier angling Nenagh. His stuff is far better than most of the rubbish on show there today.

I'm going tomorrow, I really enjoyed it last year. I heard though that there were a load of car breakins in the car park today, I heard between 6 and 15.
Don't know any more than that though.

Really enjoyed the show. hard to believe that myself and two fishing/work buddies have now gone to it 14 times, the years are flying by . There seemed to be plenty of security in the parking area on Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭Doc Farrell

Well, I had a quick chat with security and it turns out that they weren't around on Saturday, that's what he told me. Another chap told me that 3 grand worth of camera equipment was nicked from one car.

The piece by Peter O'Reilly about the basics of trout and salmon fishing was worth the ten euro intro. Didn't really see any bargains but always great to surround oneself with fishing gear chat to the people running charters. Henry Gilbeys talk was great too.

One last story, don't know if its true. One chap was sleeping in a camper van outside when he heard a noise. He went outside and two fellas trying to break into a truck chased him and tried to get into his van. One was carrying a gun. That's the story I heard, haven't a clue if its true.

Some of the Sonik and loop rods are very tempting but thankfully I didn't spend! The price of the hardy rods are spooky.
