SIS Gold Cup 525 Again

ONE of the great anomalies of recent years at Shelbourne Park has been the absence of a major open competition run over 525 yards.

However, owners and trainers of the four-bend speedsters will be pleased to learn that this situation is about to be remedied.

The SIS Live Gold Cup will be run over the 525 trip and is set to commence on Saturday, February 16.

This event was first run as the Tote Gold Cup back in 1998 and for the first 13 years was run over the traditional standard distance. But, two years ago, it was decided to change the distance for the event to 550 yards.

Moving back to 525 will certainly appeal to owners of top middle-distance runners as they return from their winter break.

The only other 525 open event at Shelbourne is the Larry Dunne Open, which takes place in late April.

Last year the SIS Live final was won by Shanks Whelan's Piercestown Sand as he upset the favourite Milldean Panther.

There is also confirmation that the ever-popular Joe Dunne Memorial Puppy 525 will again go ahead this year. However, the date for the first round has been put back by a week and will now be run on Saturday, January 26 and it is hoped that it can attract 36 runners.

Last year this event was won by Droopys Jet, which went on to win the Champion Stakes and the Night of Stars 525.
