    Hi guys

I am looking for some help with finding dental cover and the extend to which the insurance covers dental costs.

I was told by my dentist that I will need surgery in 2/2.5 years to remove some of my bottom jaw and 2 wisdom teeth to correct an under bite. (I will be getting braces for 2 years to straighten teeth first). The cost of this could be as high as €7k and was wondering would any dental cover cover part of these costs. I have briefly looked at some websites but am slightly confused on what ins covers.

Has anyone had any experience on this in the past? Any advice is greatly appreciated. :)

Dental cover will do nothing for you for the osteotomy or wisdom teeth, it's regular medical insurance you're after. Fully participating surgeons can provide this treatment on this insurance, where treatment and cover differs is where and how it is done. For example a lesser insurance plan may cover this procedure but only in a public hospital and a better more expensive plan may cover this same procedure but in a private hospital.

Do you have regular medical insurance already?? If not, you may run into some problems as if you take out an insurance plan, you are not covered for any pre existing conditions... If you have been told of the need for this treatment now then it is a known per existing condition.....

Thanks OS! Yes I have regular health insurance, so you think I might be able to get covered under this?

Ok, step 1 is to see a registered orthodontist

An orthodontist is best placed to assess your jaws, teeth, bite, crowding etc.... Your orthodontist will present the treatment options available to you, this may or may not involve surgery. If surgery is indicated, your orthodontist will most likely have one or a few surgeons they regularly work with and recommend. You then need to check that this surgeon is "fully participating" with your insurance company, ie there will be no top up fee for the surgery itself.... You then need to find out where that surgeon operates, if you are on a cheaper plan and the surgeon only operates in an expensive private hospital, then there may be a top up fee payable to the hospital for the GA and room.... You may "shop around" between the surgeons that your orthodontist recommends but don't expect your orthodontist to be keen to enter into treatment if you are going to a surgeon unknown to him/her.....
