    Why no atheist option?

I 'm just quoting the options from the 2011 census

    Why no atheist option?

I didn't think atheists defined themselves religiously.

Perhaps there should have been a tumbleweed option.

    Why no atheist option?
Atheist is not actually a religion, more a attitude.

there was a lot of that religious groping back in the day, but i thought they had clamped down on it these days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,472 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

there's "other" and "not stated". That may confuse some :)

And at the moment, there's twice as many others as not stated.

I'm more, ye know, spiritual than religious.

Atheist is not actually a religion, more a attitude.

It's more than an absence of religion. It's more than 'no religion', it's a definite "there is no such thing as god - any god".

    Why no atheist option?

    That would be "no religion"

I'm feelin a bit of an attitude here - are you atheist?

    That would be "no religion"

Well 'No Religion' doesn't = atheist. It could be someone who has a very firm belief in god or gods, but doesn't belong to a particular religion.

The only thing that denotes non belief is atheism, and if Atheist isn't an option then the results are flawed.

This is why so many have a problem with the wording of the census.

List is way, way too short

Buddhists, Shintoism, Wicca.... missing. Among others.

Even cults like Branch Davidians, People's Temple, Scientology

If you're going to ask about religions, you need to be comprehensive OP.

Other = other religions, eg Buddhist, Hindu, etc.
Not stated = atheist, agnostic, etc.

    Not so confusing.

I'm just using the options of the 2011 census. I have no doubt that the list will be very similar in the next census as well!

If you were to take Boards.ie as a representation of the Irish population you'd think that the majority of the country is atheist.

I wonder why these threads pop up in AH so much though, it isn't the religion or atheism forum.

You cant use "not stated" like that. This would mean you are tricking people into atheist or agnostic...

Not stated means I havent stated any

The census is a whole country poll , After hours is more a whole site poll than a religion or athiest forum and is less biased!

It's a question about religious belief. Some are listed, some aren't. The ones that aren't fall under 'Other', because they are other religious beliefs. Not stated includes everything else, ie positions which do not amount to a belief in any religion, such as atheism, agnosticism, and other non-religious positions which are NOT STATED in any of the other options.

Wrong. Atheism is a lack of belief in God(s), not a certainty that there aren't any.

Well, you know the way God made us all, right? And he's looking down at us from heaven and everything? And then his son came down and saved everyone and all that? And when we die we're all going to go to heaven? Well, that's the bit I have trouble with.

That position would seem to be covered by agnosticism, surely? Atheism is a conviction that there are no divinities, I'd have thought.

was about to say that. Some people also differentiate between soft and hard atheism (yeah, I said soft and hard :))

One is saying that God probably doesn't exist. One says definitely that there is no God.

I reckon Boards is frequented by people generally less than 45 years old who are angry at being brainwashed as kids and what certain organisations did to this country and its people for so many years. You cant blame them for using any forum to express that anger

That's a nuance beyond most people's sensitivities, I suspect. Personally, I'm a religious atheist, in that I'm a Buddhist who does not believe in deities. That's another nuance beyond a lot of people.

I'm a Christian. I believe and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord over all creation, and I believe that God humbled Himself in human flesh in order to rescue us from the due penalty for sin, I believe that as Jesus died the old sinful life died with Him, and as He rose again from the dead (to use the cliché) those who believe and trust in Him are born again. I received new life, to grow and live for God's glory rather than my own selfishness. I regard Jesus as King, I aim to live and speak for Him in my daily life, and I pray that in every way that God might be glorified in the process.
