    That is a pity.
Though admittedly a rare attendee, it always seemed busy whenever I was there.

Hopefully not a long term thing - would be another blow for Roscommon if it is :(.

Heard different stories about the reason for closing, but very surprised. Was in Texas today and it was sad, very bare, know people working in there, it's not good for the town. Hopefully something else will be in its place before too long.

rents are too high out in that retail park
it is a blight on the town.

if those businesses were up the town it would generate more footfall for the existing shops

Doesn't sound like it will be re-opening any time soon, real pity, however any time i've been there the que would be a mile long with only one till open. Maybe this put people off?

    +1

The cinema, when you got into your seat and all, was very good.

The service to get that far wasn't. It always seemed like it was a bunch of people not quite knowing what they were doing. There didn't seem to be anyone leading the charge.

The one till thing happened every time I was there as well. Compare it to the Carrick-on-Shannon cinema where you get served with a smile, always extra tills when needed, everyone seems clued in and happy to help.

Real shame to see a good cinema go, hopefully it will get new management and get going again.

Absolutely Delighted that Flix Cinema and Leisure has closed and that the local family run business prevailed and managed to stay open during the tough times.

While I agree there is a need for a Cinema in Roscommon Town and I am sorry that 50 people have lost their jobs I am not sorry that this venture closed down as there was never a need for two Leisure Zones and Bowling areas in a town the size of Roscommon.

Its tough times for businesses in Roscommon but I am for one am delighted to see that Roscommon Leisurezone managed to survive the tough times and that the family run busines stayed open while this greedy money making hotshots opened a business expecting to make a profit when clearly they had never done their research and since there was already one in the town. What they should have done is only opened the Cinema but then again money and greed is a terrible thing.

While I would like to see the Cinema open I hope the rumours are not true and the Leisure part never opens and onwards and upwards for the family run business of Roscommon Town.
    :)

There is such thing as a monopoly, without the competition this 'family run' leisure plex would have had no reason to keep their standards as high as you make them out to be as people would not have anywhere else to go.
I'm not sure if Flix had anything to do with the decision but the IMC in Athlone recently had a major refit to install tiered seating in its screens which resulted in reduced capacity. Wonder if they are regretting that now.

    This too shall pass.

    nice post
No cinema for at least 15 years in the town and your delighted the one we had got closed down in little over a year.I presume the poster has some connection to the bowling alley in the town and that's fair enough but to be glad a business closed down with the loss of 50 jobs and a loss of a genuine entertainment outlet is stupid and is very small minded.

the one good thing for kids and families to do indoors in Roscommon and you're happy to see it closed with the loss of jobs?

    wow.

from what I have heard, the operators of the cinema had not paid their rent since opening and were not paying other bills

if that's the way they operated it was no surprise they closed

Sad state of affairs. But did anyone really think it was going to stay open. I meana five screen cinema was never on for a town like Roscommon. Surely anyone who knew the business would have opened a three screen cinema and then if the demand was there invest in a further two screens later. Also the cinema was badly managed. There were some nice people working there but there was always a lack of direction. It was common knowlege that if you hung around the foyer long enough eventually the person taking the tickets would leave their post and you could walk straight in free gratis. Popcorn and soft drinks were a pure rip off and put huge pressure on families.
Why they bothered with a bowling alley, arcade games, play facility, and ahem a casino I don't know. Did they do any market research?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭WaltKowalski

To be a success, I think any cinema needs at least 5 screens. You have to be able offer a good choice of viewings. I doubt that's the reason for its downfall.

The cost of food is expensive in every cinema.

I agree with you that the 'play' areas seem pointless and a negligible business opportunity.

Went in to flix tonight to find it shut, had not heard about it closing .I think its a shame for the town to lose its cinema and jobs.Back to traveling to Athlone I guess. What a pity

Such a shame this place has closed. My kids loved it there, and as they are all different ages there was something there to suit them all. It may not be family run, but did employ local people. It is our personal opinion, but we find the other soft play place in town tacky, smelly, cold and worn out - with a distinct DIY feel to it. It was the same price to play here as it was in flix. Lets face it there is nothing to do here, and we don't have the weather for outdoors stuff. I hope it does re-open, if not, it's driving into Athlone and Oranmore for us.

The competition closes and Roscommon Leisure Zone ups in prices... nice!

That'll be remembered if an alternative opens/reopens.

I think the people of roscommon should stop this cinema from opening as they still owe a lot of small contractors a lot of money when we are try to keep our heads above water .i think we all should protest
    Regards Liam

The new management have nothing to do with the previous regrime.Might be more productive to try and get your money from the people who owe it to you, rather than protesting against the new business. If we protested against any business because the previous owners owed people money half the businesses in the country would be closed/vacant.

Is there any proof that there is new management ??? When all the contractors were told that when flix secured new investment they would all receive there outstanding balance . Flix cinema did not have any bank debt they had only debt to suppliers and contractors and investors and now we watch it reopen with same management they are laughing at us in our face . Some may call it smart business every one concerned should be there to protest

Article in the Herald stressed more than once that the new company are not connected to Flix...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭DjKlubster

Everthing in building is now owned by the landlord of the premises and the landlord has now leased everything to this new company who running it on a short lease for a short trial..so contractors only have one person to follow which is the man they did the work for..i know thats easier said than done as im a former employee at the cinema

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 umry

Protest protest protest stop this opening untill supplyers and contractors are paid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 umry

I think you will soon find out that the landlord dose not own all fitting and some contractors and supplyers will look to retrieve there goods

This is a phoenix company that has been set up to run the cinema, they have the same management as the previous business. Watch this space...Heres the new Boss, same as the old Boss. Most of the ex upaid staff haven't been contacted or been offered employment by this "New" company... It's another case of wool over the eyes.

umry, you have had your say. Repeating the same message over and over won't make it happen, this isn't the place for your protest. Please stop now before I ban you.
Everyone, if you have claim pls make sure to have a link to a news site.
