Soot in boiler room

I have an older relative living in a 60's house with a Unidare Jetmatic oil boiler in a small internal boiler room and every surface in the room is covered with a thin layer of soot. The horizontal surface of the flue has a thick layer of soot (some of the particles feel like more like grit instead of soot). I'm concerned that the soot is leaking into the rest of the house, especially the adjoining kitchen and could cause health issues. I cleaned the flue last winter, sealed the flue inspection hatch with fire cement and bolted down the top panel of the boiler which was just left sitting on the two studs without nuts. Every time I see the room I think the boiler reeds to be ripped out and replaced by a nice new clean one....but the boiler works every time it is turned. Is there a fix I can do?

Get someone to have a look at the boiler needs servicing and proper set up not just cleaning it out they will test it and give you a cert/ report on it and advise on any works needed to it.For a list of oil technicians check www.oftec.org and search for stench in your area

Jesus fella I know working with oil can make you smell sometimes but that's a bit mean.

You should immediately have the boiler serviced. The soot build-up is more than likely caused by the air intake valve needing to be regulated (clockwise control switch inside boiler). Too much air inside the combustion chamber causes smoke hence soot.

A registered engineer needs to clean out all the soot internally within the boiler, it's probably caked, and the soot acts as an insulator. If the boiler is caked with soot then it is more difficult to get the heating to work properly hence the boiler working overtime and creating more soot with lower and lower efficiency.

Also get the engineer to test the systems efficiency. Had the same problem recently and the boiler moved from 60% to after service 97.4% efficient.
