    MONITORING QUESTIONNAIRE
This Equality Monitoring Form is compulsory for all applicants applying for positions within Northern Ireland in accordance with the Fair Employment and Treatment (NI) Order 1998.
If you are submitting your CV for a position within the Republic of Ireland you do not have to complete this section.

We are an Equal Opportunities Employer. We do not discriminate on grounds of religious belief or political opinion. We practice equality of opportunity in employment and select the best person for the job.

To demonstrate our commitment to equality of opportunity in employment we need to monitor the community background and sex of all our applicants and employees, as required by the Fair Employment and Treatment (NI) Order 1998.

The information you are asked to supply below will be treated in the strictest confidence and protected from misuse. This information will not be available to anyone making decisions about your application and will be used for monitoring purposes only.

Regardless of whether we practice religion, most of us in Northern Ireland are seen as either Catholic or Protestant. We are therefore asking you to indicate your community background by
    *selecting the appropriate answer below:
*Please indicate whether you are: a)A member of the Roman Catholic church
b)A member of the Protestant church
    c)none of the above
If you do not complete this questionnaire, we are encouraged to use the “residuary” method, which means that we can make a determination on the basis of personal information on file/application form.

Note: It is a criminal offence under the legislation for a person to “give false information in connection with the preparation of the monitoring return”.

I just applied for a job and it wouldn't let me confirm until i stated my religion. What a load of ****e ? Why would they need to know that ? Has anyone ever seen this before ?

It is a monitoring procedure to prevent discrimination - something the North has had problems with.

Its a compulsory thing. Its done to ensure that the employer isn't showing a strong bias one way or the other. The answer is kept separate from the rest of the application.

Who maintains the record of this? The company itself or the equality body?

Some companies have the same procedure across the board.

In other cases, you will be dealing with an Irish subsidiary that has its own procedures.

The form you quote from above says "If you are submitting your CV for a position within the Republic of Ireland you do not have to complete this section."

They probably forgot about "the whole border thing". If you can't send the application without an answer just fill it in. It won't be used for any purpose.

If I recall correctly the employer has to keep a record of all documents for inspection.

An agnostic would look at the form and wonder should I fill this in or not,an atheist would just throw it away.

They do appear to allow for that on the form:

Yes, on the form they say if you're from the ROI you don't have to fill in that part of the application, but in that instance it looks a bit like they decide for you:

Yes, but are you a Catholic atheist or a Protestant atheist?

Yeah I remember being asked on a few applications to say my religion, nationality, ethnicity & all that, I just don't see how it's relevant for an application. I sent my CV to a different job ad and they replied asking me to send them a picture of me. I thought that was a bit much like.. not gonna hire me if you think I'm ugly or something? Wouldn't wanna work for someone like that anyway

Yes, but are you a Catholic atheist or a Protestant atheist?
Actually that's what they do. If your school has a saints name they choose catholic; if you have an English name they could you as a protestant.
