Dog has red lump in eye

    Hi guys,

My one year old lurcher has had a red eye for a few days. Its just the outer corner of one eye. We thought it'd clear up, and were using eye drops (bought in vets) in the hopes of making it better.

However, last night I noticed that she has developed a red lump on the eye, again on the outer corner. It's actually on the surface of the eyeball, on the white part just bordering the iris. It looks a bit nasty, but I think it's painless, and doesn't seem to be irritating her.
I've put in a couple pics.

I'm pretty worried now though. All my googling has only brought me to "cherry eye", but that seems to only affect the inner part the eye? Anyway, I was unable to bring her to the vet today, because my dad is working late today, and I forgot to ask him for the money. Is it ok to leave it til morning? I'm just worried its serious, but he seems her normal, happy self.

She had conjunctivitis a couple months ago (symptoms were watery eyes and green discharge in both eyes) which we got treated by the vet. Could this be related to that?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just wondering if anyone knows what could be wrong with the poor thing, and if it's ok to wait 'til morning to see vet. Thanks!

Maybe give the vet a call and see what they say? Did the vet check the surface of the eye - with orange dye and shining a light in? When my dog had conjunctivitis last year (from swimming in SLIME) the vet said she had to do that first before deciding what drops to give him so he wouldn't get an ulcer. Not to worry you but I know somebody who's dog had an ulcer and he described it as a red dot in/on his eye.

    Thanks,
Haven't brought her to the vet over it yet, just dropped in to get the drops. She is booked in for tomorrow.

How serious is an ulcer on the eye?
When we took her to the vet over the conjunctivitis, the vet did indeed put a sort of luminous dye in the eye (and a light). I think that's just to search for surface scratches though.

Anyway, suppose it'll be sorted tomorrow, still a bit worried!! She seems to be constantly in the vet surgery!!

    Hi
My dog gets that every few weeks. Looks sore but really doesn't seem to bother her. Although hers is usually gone within 24 hours. Was worried like yourself first couple of times. Think it's just an allergy or something. We had her with vet a while ago for ear infection and vet told us not to worry about the eye. Let us know how you get on as would be interested in a second opinion but main thing is if it doesn't bother the dog then it's hopefully not a huge deal

    Hi OP,
    Your dog is beautiful!
However, as this is very much a matter for the vet, and not something anyone should be attempting to diagnose or advise on via this forum, I'm going to close the thread in the hope that you will PM the mods after you've been to the vet, so we can reopen the thread for you to update?
    Thanks,
    DBB

She's so cute! Hope she got her eye sorted.

    Aw thanks.

Just to update, took her to the vet and she had actually gotten something stuck in her eye!
The little hard red mass is apparently a delayed reaction to having a foreign body in the eye. There is also a possibility that whatever it was is STILL stuck in the eye, and this is her body trying to expel it.

We were given more maxitrol drops to combat the inflammation. Have to call vet on Thursday with an update, and if there's no improvement, it's likely the "thing" has not been expelled, and she will need surgery to remove the little mass and whatever may be causing it. Poor doggie!!

Anyway she's still in good spirits, aren't they always! Just hoping it'll improve and she won't need the surgery. Apparently it's a simple procedure though.

    Thanks again everyone.

Ah hope she'll be ok! Will your own vet be able to do the surgery if needed or do you need to go to a specialist? My guy had a touch of conjunctivitis last week but sorted with some opticrom - he's always swimming and rolling around in mud so gets it every now and then. I've stocked up on some OTC drops I read about on a forum in the uk for next time! ;)

It's a good idea, it's no surprise they pick up little eye infections and the like considering all the things they like to roll in! My genius dog jumps face first (literally :P) into everything.

Apparently, if our girl HAD had an ulcer on her eye though, the drops we were using could have worsened it. So really should have checked with the vet first before using drops, we were just lucky this time!

Also, she didn't mention a specialist, just said they could do it there in the surgery. Apparently the fact that the lump is only on the white of the eye makes it less problematic to remove.
